At that moment, my feet refused to take me home. They were glued in place. Jake’s sad eyes locked with mine and I couldn’t look away. All I saw was a little boy who wanted to be like his older brother. His idle stare gave me the impression he wasn’t surprised by the greeting. Like he was resigned to it. His eyes didn’t let me go until the car sped off, and I could only make out the red tail lights. I never saw his dad again, but I saw plenty of his brother. Jake stayed close to him around school until he left to go to university.

We’ve been sort-of friends ever since. I never ask him about his family, and he never volunteers any information. It’s as if the evening never happened, yet it’s etched into my mind so deeply I always think about it when I see the harsher side to Jake. Those few moments had tied me to Jake, and although the tenuous threads may have frayed, they always make me go easy on him when I really should give up and never speak to him again.

“Have you got your essay finished?” I change the subject, wanting to get back to surer ground.

“Essay?” he asks, again looking for me to explain.

“You know, the one assigned last week comparing the multi-store model of memory and the working memory model?”

“Looks like I’ve got a piss-poor memory, huh.” He wiggles his eyebrows humorously, and I’m right back to loving him again.

I turn away and bury my head in my hands and try to balance out my own mood towards Jake. The lesson is over with no other wisecracks from Jake, and I head over to the other side of the school for my last lesson of the day.

“Hey, Lil, wait up,” Jake calls after me, and I freeze. He waits for the steady stream of students to thin around us before going any further. It’s my turn to look expectantly at him.

“So, you have a better offer for the weekend than what’s-her-name’s party?”

“No, I just don’t think it’s my thing.” I pull my books into my chest and inch my feet towards my next class. As much as I want to keep talking to Jake, I don’t want to be late. I keep my eyes away from his, not wanting to get trapped in them. It’s a constant hazard I’m susceptible to. I’m sure he can see everything I feel if he will only look a little harder at me. As no other guy in school has ever shown me any attention, I’m under no illusion the first one will be Jake Stewart. My feet start toward the science block. Jake walks beside me a little way. Sometimes, on the occasions when Jake was close to acting like a normal friend, I felt as if he was waiting to tell me something. It never transpired though and like all the other times, he peels away and turns back in the opposite direction. No ‘bye’ or ‘see you later’, but then, that isn’t Jake’s style.

My drink is finally empty, and I remain firm in my decision not to drink any more. Charlotte, on the other hand, hasn’t listened to the same advice. She has downed at least three other vodka cocktails and is now looking a little green. After settling in with the others, we had a good evening. A few guys had come over to chat with Charlotte, Jenny and Claudia. I wasn’t sure if they were from our year or people who Louise’s brother had invited.
It’s a little after 10:30 p.m. and I need to venture inside to find the loo and grab a glass of water. “Hey, I’m heading inside. Does anyone want a drink? Aside from Charlotte, that is?”

“Hey, no fair. I’m… fine.”

“Sure. I think you need the water more than I do. Come on.” I ease her from her chair, and we head back in.
The noise from the house had escalated since we arrived. There are people everywhere. A hot wave engulfs us as we open the back door and try to push through the crowd. It’s insane. People are crammed in and spilling out of the front door. My sensible head sees disaster written all over this.

“Come on. I need to find the bathroom before we get you some water.” We reverse our roles as I keep hold of Charlotte who has started to sway. I look around the hallway and try to spot the bathroom. There are only a few people on the stairs, so I start in that direction, but I stop. As I look up, Jake stands at the top of the stairs, leaning against the side bannister. Louise is draped over him. I have the perfect view of both of them.

I take a gulp of air and hold it in my chest, determined the balloon of air will protect my heart from breaking. Jake’s hand is holding her bum, pulling her into him. I don’t think she could be plastered any closer. Her hands stroke his chest. She’s all over him and not being at all subtle about it. I take it all in in a blink. I see the sly look in Louise’s eyes and the hard set of Jake’s jaw. My eyes flutter to clear the tears forming, but I can’t tear them away.

As if he can feel me watching, Jake turns his head and stares straight at me. His eyes, devoid of all emotion or warmth, hold mine. The little lost boy from my memory is nowhere to be seen. His eyes aren’t mischievous or playful. They are harsh and cold and my stomach crashes to the floor. My heart misses a few beats.

We stare, locked in each other’s sights. My eyes focus on Jake, and I can’t break free. He turns his head to Louise, and with his eyes locked on mine, licks the side of her face before he claims her mouth and kisses her deeply.

I grab a beer from the counter in the kitchen and head out the back door. Night had drawn in despite the long sunny day. I take a seat next to a few guys from my psychology class who are sitting on the decking. From this position, I have the perfect view of the two main rooms of the house. And a perfect fucking view of Lily dancing with some stranger.

I stand abruptly. “Hey, watch it, Jake.” I look down and realise I’ve tipped beer all over… this kid’s lap.

“Sorry, my bad.”

I sit back down and wrestle the possessive fire bolt that just struck in my chest. I have no fucking right to be jealous. I could have Lily if I want. I know she still has feelings for me. She tries to hide it, but every time those big tempting eyes look at me, I can see what she’s keeping quiet about. She’s never told me how she feels, never spoken about it with her friends, from what I can tell.

It’s been our mutually kept little secret. All the way through school.

Until this fucking minute, as I see this guy pull her in closer and whisper in her ear. Her innocence is screaming at him. I bet he can even smell it on her. That fresh flowers in spring scent that never seems to leave her. Another thing that drives me fucking crazy.

The guy seems to have a couple of friends with him. None of them I recognise.

“Hey, anyone know who those three stooges are?”

“No, they aren’t from St. George’s.”

I settle in and watch. The shadows shroud me in darkness and keep me hidden. I must be a masochist because it’s fucking misery. Lily is sweet, kind and laughing like she doesn’t have a care in the world. She’s breathtaking.

She stops with the dancing and pulls out her phone. I look at my watch and notice the time. Midnight is her usual pick up time. The guy follows her as she and Charlotte leave the dancing. I can see them in the hall through the next window along, and I don’t think twice about getting up to see just what this guy’s intentions are.

My view into the room is obscured, but there is no missing the kiss he gives Lily. The fucking kiss I’d always wanted to give her. I smash my bottle on the floor as the rage inside gets the better of me. I ignore every pair of eyes that are now on me and march right back into the room.

Prince-fucking-charming comes back into the room with a shit eating grin on his face.

“You! Don’t you ever fucking hurt her, you got me? If you do, I’ll make your life a fucking misery and be happy to do it.” My hands grip around his shirt collar as I spit the warning at him.

Several pairs of hands try to separate us, but they have no fucking chance.

“Relax, man. I’m not going to mess with her.” He has an inch or so on me in height, but I more than make up for it with brawn. “What’s she to you? You her brother?”

“No. Just watch yourself. She’s too fucking good for you.” My heart stampedes in my chest as I lay down my warning. I release him and leave the room. I’m pumped and ready to rip someone apart. Everything is heightened, and I need to get out before I do something fucking stupid. I turn and realise everyone is staring at me. It’s eerily quiet as the music has suddenly been turned off.

I do the usual and ignore everyone and leave through the back, out into the garden and around the side of the house. God, I’m a bastard.
