"Just say it, Eden. I mean, you've been saying it for over a year to all your buddies, so how about now? Project Arma. You think I was part of the project. That I knowingly injected people with experimental drugs that could kill them. That I killed tons of soldiers while figuring out the perfect super soldier concoction. Getting close to you was part of my evil plan. Tonight, I must have been meeting my partner to discuss how we were going to trick you this time." Standing, Shylah crossed her arms. "Is that correct? Did I sum up everything you believe about me, Eden?"

Pushing his chair back, Eden stood in front of Shylah, towering over her. For the first time since she arrived in Marble Falls, his size didn't intimidate her. There was nothing this man could do to hurt her that was more painful than his low opinion.

"If you didn't hide things from me, I wouldn't have to guess what the hell was going on."

Done with the conversation, Shylah marched to the door and pulled it open. "Well, you guessed wrong."

Eden remained where he was for a moment, leading Shylah to wonder if he would leave. She knew full well that if Eden didn't want to go, then she wouldn't be able to force him. Then he started moving toward the door. Shylah didn't know whether to be hurt or happy that he was leaving.

"Did it ever occur to you that the thing I'm hiding is to protect you? To protect us until I'm ready to share?"

Stopping in his tracks, Eden turned his head. Some of the anger had faded, and resignation shined through. "There is no us, Shylah. You've made damn sure of that."

Then he was gone.

Shutting the door behind him, Shylah leaned against it and scrunched her eyes shut. The pain in her chest was crippling. Was that true? Had she damaged them with her secrets to the point of no return?

She had believed that they were strong enough to get through anything. Maybe they'd always been more fragile than she'd thought.

Increasing her pace, a chill worked its way through Evie’s limbs. The sun was almost finished setting, and that meant it would be dark soon. Evie hated the dark. She was automatically at a disadvantage with Troy in the dark. Another disadvantage she should say. He could still see, she was blind. It was an extra layer of protection for him, like he needed that.

Luca had offered Evie a ride, but she’d declined, hoping the fresh air would clear her mind. As the echoes of her steps filled the air, she started to regret her decision. At this very moment, she could be sitting next to him in his warm car, breathing in his musky scent.

Evie could almost hear his deep voice in the back of her mind. Feel the vibration of his words. A smile touched Evie’s lips at the thought.

No. What was she doing?

Shaking her head, Evie pushed down the feelings. Feelings were dangerous. They were the reason she was where she was in her life at the moment. Luca was dangerous to her. She had to keep her distance, no matter how much her body wanted her to do otherwise.

As the hairs on the back of Evie’s neck stood up, she suddenly had the feeling of being followed.  Subtly, as to not draw any attention, Evie turned her head to look down the road behind her. Nothing.

Taking a calming breath, she forced herself to maintain her pace, even though her legs wanted to race. She could see her house up ahead. Then she would be inside with the semblance of safety. Not far to go.

A rustling noise behind Evie sounded. This time she did stop. Turning, she stared out to the empty street. Again, there was nothing. About to turn back, the sight of fresh shoe tracks in the mud next to the path caught her attention.

Turning back to her house, this time, she did increase her pace.

Stop being stupid, Evie, there are dozens of people who use this path.

So why did it stick out to her?

"Tell me something about you, Evie." Evie's gaze darted to Luca, then away. She chewed her bottom lip, seemingly contemplating whether to tell him something or not.

"I like computers." Luca's brows shot up. It wasn't a surprise, he'd suspected as much, but he thought she'd share something trivial, like a favorite color.

"Makes sense. You learned how to use the online system at work pretty quickly." Evie's eyes dropped to her feet at the compliment, but Luca saw a hint of a smile on her lips. "What do you spend most of your time doing on computers?"

Evie shrugged, looking uncomfortable for a moment. "Not much. Just some gaming and things."

Lie. Evie had just told Luca a lie. He could tell by her pupils dilating, her gaze darting away. There had also been a slight hitch in her heart rate. Why would she lie about that?

"Ever thought about studying IT?" Luca pushed.

There was another pause before Evie's gaze dropped, and she continued, "No. I, uh . . . it hadn't really crossed my mind."

Another lie. Interesting.

As Evie took another step, her foot caught on something, and Luca could see she was going to tumble down. Catching her arm with his lightning reflexes, Luca held her body against his. Her skin was warm to touch where her shirt had risen slightly.

When Evie glanced up. Luca could smell vanilla and strawberries on her. She was all soft and delicate, where he was hard and not delicate. He had to fight the urge to pull her head up and press his lips to hers.

"Go on a date with me."

It was a statement, but Luca still needed a yes. Evie looked taken aback. Luca was a bit too. He hadn't anticipated those words to leave his mouth, but now that they had, they felt right. Knowing what kind of response he was going to receive before she spoke the words, Luca patiently waited to rebut.

"I can't."

Wishing she would expand, he was disappointed when only silence followed.

Not willing to give up so easily, Luca lowered his head and placed his lips next to her ear.

"Go on a date with me."

He felt the shiver run up her spine. Evie's head turned, and her lips were a mere few centimeters from his. Her warm breath touched his lips. If he just lowered his head a fraction, they would be touching.

The indecision was clear to see in her eyes, but beneath that, he could see the desire. It was almost a desperate yearning to say yes. Deciding he didn't want to play fair, Luca pulled Evie closer. She wanted him as much as he wanted her.

"Say yes," Luca started a gentle stroke on the inside of the wrist as he whispered the words into her ear. "Please."

Trailing his mouth down her neck, his lips never touched her, but the promise was there.

"Yes."
