“He’s a handsome devil, isn’t he?” A low voice drawled from the back end of the car and she yanked her hand away as if it’d been scorched. She scowled at Gabe, who leaned against the bed of her truck, one ankle crossed in front of the other, arms folded across his chest as he smirked at her. Cam must have put him to work today, since it appeared he had just showered. His sandy brown hair was damp where it curled around the nape of his neck and up under his hat. His plaid shirt was clean, his jeans, worn and comfortable-looking, frayed along the seams, as if they were old. And damned if he didn’t look even better than he had in his fancy, city clothes that morning. She folded her arms and glared. “I thought all cars are women. Temperamental and something to be taken care of.” He pushed off the end of the truck and sauntered toward her. “That’s a very old-fashioned view of women, Emma. First off, women don’t need to be taken care of. My momma taught me that they can handle most anything thrown at them, possibly better than men, and I listen to my momma. Second, I believe in equality. A car can be male or female, and trust me. This beast is all male.” She sucked in a breath and narrowed her gaze. He was going to school her on feminism? “I don’t need a lecture on women’s rights, Gabe Buchanan. Because this car is tough, it must be male?” Gabe’s smile never wavered. He leaned forward as if imparting a secret, his breath teasing her ear. She shivered. “Nope. I checked under the chassis. He’s male.” He stepped back, his laughter ringing out around them. Her eyes widened and she was about to give him a blistering reply when she paused, realized he was teasing her. She relaxed and laughed with him. “Do you take anything seriously? He cocked his head, considering her words for a moment. “My momma, because she scares me. The IRS, for the same reason. God, because I’m hedging my bets there. And my family. Other than that, probably not.” She shook her head and turned to the cab of her truck. “I don’t think I’d better take anything you say seriously.” He rested a hand on the frame of the truck, right above her head. “You want to go for a spin? He handles real nice. If you’re good, I might even let you drive him.” “And how do you define nice?” She tensed, waiting for a smarmy come-on. He must have correctly interpreted her body language because he straightened and his tone, when he spoke, was serious for once. “It’s simple. Kind words, respect, maybe a little flirting. Nothing else. Anyone who asks for anything else is an asshole.”

He rolled her out and swung her back in, hauling her close, both hands sliding down her body to rest on her hips and pull her against his body. He curved his upper body over her and leaned his face into her shoulder, whispering, “Wrap your arms around my neck or people might think you don’t want to be with me.” She wound her arms around his neck, her fingers combing tentatively through the strands that tickled the nape of his neck. He sighed and let his hands slide around her to lower back, to flirt with the top edge of her very fine ass. He didn’t dare go too far down, not yet. But his thumb slid under her top to stroke along the exposed skin, the soft sweet skin that he could easily imagine tracing with his tongue and Emma gasped in his ear, then tugged his hair, enough to make his eyes water. “Watch yourself, Buchanan. Don’t take liberties.” He chuckled, face still pressed against her hair. “You want to make this look good, right?” She grunted a little and pressed herself into him and stiffened. “Gabe!” He gave a slight shrug. “It’s a natural reaction to holding a beautiful woman in my arms. I can’t help it.” She leaned back enough to glare at him. “Try.” He gave her an innocent look but her narrowed gaze told him she wasn’t buying it. He sighed. “There’s nothing I can do unless we stop dancing.” She snorted. “Next you’ll tell me we have to keep dancing so you don’t embarrass yourself.” His grin broadened. “Well, now that you mention it… It would help. I mean, it’s really about you so if you walk away, everyone will know.” She rolled her eyes. “Let’s just finish this.” He laughed, a booming laugh that echoed through the dance floor and made several couples nearby stare at them, including Tara and Hailey and their husbands, who eyed him with suspicion. He lowered his head and danced Emma further away from her friends and toward a dark corner. “Now you’re sounding like a wife. Do you have a headache too?” She frowned at him and he just laughed. “Definitely like a wife. You should be looking like you’re in love with me, or at least in lust, if you want anyone to buy this little act.” The song ended and she stepped back and he felt the absence of her immediately. She glanced down and smirked. “You may want to hide out somewhere or figure something out about your, um, little problem.” “Nothing little about it.” He leaned forward so only she could hear. “But you already know that.”

Chase Summers leaned against the tunnel wall leading out to the arena, thumbs hooked in the loops of his comfortable old jeans and wearing his lucky flannel shirt under the competitor's vest with his sponsor's badges decorating the lapels. He barely heard the dull roar of the crowd, the pounding country rock music, sounds he could filter out as he focused on his ride. People milled about, other cowboys waiting for their rides, watching the competition, or those who had finished and were seeing who made the next round with them. The sports medicine team pushed past Chase and ran to the arena to help one of the riders who had just gotten thrown and was slow to get up. Chase didn't go look, couldn't afford the distraction, not this close to his ride. Couldn't let the risks mess with his head, not yet. He'd check the status later on the injury list. It'd been a bad season so far. Bull riding was one of the most dangerous sports there was. Yeah, people complained about football. Two men lining up to attack each other in the pursuit of a ball. Not that he didn't love football or respect the game, but those men weighed a couple hundred pounds. Put a guy who weighed a couple hundred pounds, maybe, against a fifteen hundred to two thousand-pound bull who didn't play by any rules except to kick the shit out of you. Then see who had it rougher. Despite the dangers, he'd ride the bull any day. The rush, the adrenaline, the reward was intense. But this season there seemed to be more injuries than usual, more of the top guys out for extended periods. The number one rider was kicked in the face just two weeks ago and needed major reconstruction, leaving the field open for someone like Chase to catch up. He took a deep breath, letting the smell of dirt, bull, and rawhide permeate his lungs, then he let it out slowly, expelling the thoughts of injuries like a bad odor. The scents reminded him of the ranch, the only home he'd ever known, the home he never thought he'd actually have and wouldn't have except for the generosity of his mentor and foster father, Douglas Rawlings. J.D. McIntyre strode up next to him, his chaps and jeans coated in dirt from his fall in the ring and clapped him on the shoulder. "You up next? Who did you draw?" "Oleander," Chase replied, nodding to his sometime traveling companion and hell-raiser. J.D. snorted. "Better you than me. That bull looks sweet and docile but turns into a righteous demon in the chute." Chase shrugged and checked his gloves. "He's worth the points. I'll need them for the lead." J.D. shook his head. "Well, someone had to draw him. If anyone can, it'd be you. Go beat the Brazilian and bring home the trophy. I'm out of the running for now. Damned Quick Draw tossed me in 2.8 seconds." Chase grunted. Quick Draw was living up to his name again. But J.D. was his only other real competition outside of Antonio Pereira. Antonio was ranked number three overall, but he hadn't gotten as high a bull as Chase or J.D. If Chase could ride Oleander, he could take the competition from Antonio and gain serious ground in the overall rankings. He heard his name being called to the chute. "See you on the other side." He nodded to J.D. and strode to the ride-chute where Oleander was already being led. Oleander was a beast of a bull, docile as most of these creatures were outside of the arena, calm, almost amiable. He was mostly white with a few splashes of black to break up the albino quality. He settled quietly in the chute, no banging against the metal walls, no fighting the handlers. Chase eyed the bull who steadfastly ignored him, as if he were bored with the proceedings, but Chase knew better. Chase climbed the metal fencing next to the bull and handed the rope to the handler. He grabbed the opposite fence across the bull, making sure to get a good grip, then he set his boot solidly on Oleander's back, letting the bull know he was there. He waited a few seconds, pausing to the let the bull do his customary buck, an introduction from Oleander, a preliminary howdy-do. He then slid his legs around the bull, keeping his toes pointed forward to ensure his spurs stayed away from its flanks. He warmed up the rope, checking the slack, then rubbed the rope to get the rosin sticky and hot on his glove. He punched the rosin rope away and warmed the handle, to improve his grip. Then he positioned the bull rope for the ride. Through this, Oleander stayed fairly docile, almost asleep, but Chase wasn't fooled. No bull was assigned the final round of any tournament if he wasn't a tough contender, and Oleander was one of the toughest. Several competitors swore this damned beast used psychological warfare against many of the riders to beat them. No one had ever ridden him successfully; Chase was fixing to be the first. When the rope was situated to his satisfaction, he took the final piece of wrap and slid up the back, put his feet toward the shoulder of the bull, and nodded. The chute opened with a clang and they were off. Oleander came alive in a whirlwind of motion, shoulders and back arching then colliding with the ground, designed to jar the rider's teeth. At the same time, the bull's back end came up, and twisted to throw Chase off balance and hopefully off his back, but Chase was prepared and moved with the bull. Chase kept his legs clasped around the bull's body, shifting and moving as the bull flung his body about in a ferocious attempt to dislodge the human interloper from his back. All the while, Chase waited to hear the blessed bell indicating that he had successfully made the eight seconds needed to beat the behemoth between his legs. But all he heard was the sound of grunts and snorts and bull snot flying. Then, finally, the sound of victory. The bell sounded and Chase made his move to dismount, but the bull made one unexpected sideways turn and a blunted horn came straight right for Chase's head.
Blinding pain.
Darkness.

"Hello, Hailey. I didn't expect to see you here." Hailey's breath caught in her throat and she swallowed hard. Chase Summers. Her heart pounded in her chest and the world felt like it tilted under her feet. She had expected to run into him at some point. She had only hoped to have some time to settle in, had time to prepare herself before being confronted with the reality of him. She drank in the sight of him eagerly, despite the pit in her stomach. It'd been three, no four years since she'd last seen him, since Adam's funeral. Chase had been a rock for her, solid as the granite the town had been named for. He stood by her side, making sure she had everything she needed while she slept-walked through those horrifying days when she tried to figure out what went wrong and how to move on with her life and raise a two-year-old on her own. He had offered to stay on in Billings and help, but what was there for him to do? So, she'd sent him on his way and tried to get on with finding her new normal. He'd called a couple of times after Chase died, but she had always responded with a text saying she was busy or something. He’d seemed as relieved as she, and she had no trouble staying away from Grand Junction in the Professional Bull Riding's off-season, effectively avoiding him, even as a part of heart wanted to be near him. But she had to make her own way, and Chase was too much a loner for her to rely on. Tara's head was bopping back and forth between the two of them like a tennis match, with Chase was standing at the top of the porch steps, patiently waiting while Hailey took processed him. She took another step to see him more clearly in the shadows of the porch and gasped. "Oh my God, Chase. What happened to you?" He was leaning on a cane and his face had a few yellowed bruises to match bruises on his arms. The T-shirt should have revealed the six-pack stomach she knew he had, but instead it showed a smooth area where bandages were wrapped tightly around ribs. Her gaze fixed on the subtle tightening of his jaw and the muscles around his eyes revealing the tension and pain he must be feeling. Damn that moved that had kept her from keeping up with the circuit, damn this fucking sport that injured him, and most of all damn his adrenaline need to risk his life for the sport that killed her husband. He quirked a grin at her. "Not a pretty sight, is it? Oleander took offense at me riding him for eight seconds and got his revenge. I'll be all right in a few weeks." "But for now, he's staying here in the apartment I promised you. I'm so sorry, Hailey," Tara finished in a rush. "I completely forgot yesterday. I was so excited that you were interested. But the whole house is empty and the rest of the place is planned for a B&B, so the other rooms are all finished but not rented until next season. You and AJ can have the run of the place until then." Tara's words slowly sank in, and Hailey pivoted and stared at her. "You mean, have me and AJ live here with Chase? For how long?" Chase, too, stared at Tara. "Wait a minute. You never said anything about having a roommate." "It's perfect. Chase, someone needs to make sure you're okay, especially after your lung injury, and Hailey needs a place to stay." Chase's jaw clenched, but he only aimed a questioning look at her, and she flushed. "I have a place to stay. I just prefer to find somewhere else." Tara waved her hand and arched a brow. "Come on. Do you really want to stay with your parents when you can live here?" Chase started down the steps and both women stopped him immediately. He glared at them both. "I can walk down the damned stairs. It's just a sprain. I was at the barn earlier today. Tara, can you give Hailey and I a few minutes? I think we need to talk before we agree to being roommates." Tara's gaze shot between them, full of questions, but she nodded. "I'll go hang with Ty at the barn and be back soon. Don't run her off. She's the second-best thing to happen to Redemption Ranch, and we need her." Chase grinned. "And you're the first?" Tara shot him a saucy grin over her shoulder. "And don't you forget it."
