We are the Rossetti’s. The exiled “sixth family” of the New York mafia. We’re the good guys. People don’t fear us…much. They respect us. The five of us? We’re the Brooklyn Brothers. And we protect what’s ours. Jasmine Kingston should run from me. I mean, she should literally pick up her dress, toss away her heels, and haul ass in the complete opposite direction. Because for the last few months that she’s been in New York and taking the fashion world by storm, I’ve been watching her. From my ivory tower, from the shadows. Wherever she’s been, I’ve been only feet away, and she hasn’t even realized it. Until now. I can’t stay away and watch one more man take his shot with her. She needs to know what she’s doing to me. Especially since things are heating up with my family’s enemies. I just pray those enemies don’t discover my only weakness. Maybe it was the wrong way to go. Maybe I should never have touched her. Never treated myself to her addictive taste. But I can’t alleviate this obsession I have with her any more than I can put a bullet between my own eyes. She’s mine to protect now. I’ll burn my entire fortune to the ground and take ten of those bullets before I let anything happen to her. I just hope she doesn’t find out what I’ve done.

Cris nodded slowly. “You’re right. I don’t have time to devote myself to a relationship right now. But what you proposed that night works just fine for me, if the offer is still on the table.” Why did I experience a weird sinking feeling at his words? That was what I wanted to hear. Wasn’t it? Sex only. Nothing more, nothing less. No ties, no feelings. Just a physical connection that would culminate in mutual sexual release. I inwardly cringed. That sounded so cold. So…robotic. But it was no different than what I’d had with Marcus, so there was no reason for this situation with Cris to feel wrong. It wasn’t like Cris elicited actual feelings in me. Then everything from earlier that morning came rushing back like a tidal wave. “Actually, um, I don’t know if that’s such a good idea now.” He angled his head to the side. I’d learned this was something he did when he was frustrated. “Oh? Why is that?” His body was way too close to mine. Why I thought I’d be able to hold a conversation with him in such close quarters amongst these racks was beyond me. Damn that suit and tie. Cris taunting me with his sensuality and good taste was like my Achilles’ Heel. “Long story short, I just got a bunch of work dumped on me,” I tried to explain. “The next few months are going to be even more hectic than the last few have been. I don’t think I’m going to have much time for…anything else.” Moving forward, he crowded me against the layers of tool and silk behind me until it felt as if our bodies were cocooned by the materials. If he came any closer, things were bound to take a sharp turn toward Sexy Town. “You’re telling me you won’t even have time to get fucked?” His crass words should have bothered me. But that couldn’t have been any further from the truth. He lowered his head, bringing our mouths dangerously close. “Because everyone should make time to fuck. I thought that was what the other night was all about. Am I missing something here?” I worried he could hear the loud gulping sound I made. “No, it was. But things are a little more complicated now. I have to design an entire new line in four months. I doubt I’m going to have much free time to spare.” Several beats of silence passed. I finally worked up the nerve to meet his gaze. He looked to be considering something. “Okay,” he said resolutely. “You have a lot going on. I get that. But it sounds to me like you’re going to need a little relief every now and then. A distraction so you don’t work yourself into a nervous breakdown. I understand that better than anyone. Let me be that for you.” “A distraction?” His mouth quirked into a wicked grin. “You’re already familiar with my preferred methods of distraction. Believe me, I can take your mind off the stress. I can release the tension. Let me prove it to you.” His hand landed on my hip. Again, I should have removed it. Stopped whatever was about to start here. Instead, I melted into his touch. Especially when his thumb began to rub across my hipbone. My eyes closed of their own volition. When his mouth skated over my jaw, his hand inching down to cup my ass, my head fell back only to be pillowed by the cushion of fabrics. “I thought you already proved it,” I whispered. He hissed out a breath. “What I proved at the bar is that you’re affected by my touch. What I proved on your couch was that you want my touch. What I have yet to prove is that I can get you off with my touch.” The eroticism of the moment was getting to me. Hidden away by luxurious fabrics while a dozen people stood on the other side of the room, Cris’s sandalwood scent invading my senses. Heat suddenly struck between my thighs like a bolt of lightning. I was starting to think I didn’t even need his touch. His words alone were getting the job done. “Are you telling me you’ll be able to do that for me anytime I need it?” I asked. “Anywhere?” “Fuck yeah, that’s what I’m saying,” he growled. “I’ll make you come whenever you need to, however many times you need to. Guaranteed.” “That’s a bit cocky. Not to mention ambitious.” “Cocky or not, it’s a goddamn fact. And I’m going to start proving it right now.” Is he serious? He pushed my sweater up my waist, his fingers slipping beneath the waistband of my leggings. Yep, he’s serious. “Can’t wait to feel what you’ve got waiting for me under here,” he whispered. “Am I going to find you wet for me, Jasmine?” Without. A. Doubt.

Cris
I took a step toward Jasmine, noting the worry line on her forehead. That would be gone by the end of the night. I’d make damn sure of it. “I would have killed that man tonight if he’d touched you,” I bit out. “I almost did for even talking to you. For threatening to take you away from me. For pointing a deadly weapon anywhere near you. That would have been illegal because I wouldn’t have been able to claim self-defense in the end. Not with the way I beat him. But I’d still have done it if he’d laid his filthy hands on you. Does that make me a vicious criminal?” I watched her swallow as I took another step forward. She retreated until her back hit the fireplace. I crowded against her, caging her in by placing my hands on the mantle beside her head. “And if you’re concerned about me being a violent person, I think you got your answer tonight,” I continued. “But I’m not violent toward innocent people. I reserve violence for those who deserve it. Specifically, those who threaten people I care about.” I let those words sink in for a moment. She could take that comment however she wanted, though the implication was anything but subtle. | “Is that something you think you can handle?” I whispered against her parted lips. “Because that’s who I am. That’s what you get when you’re involved with me. So, now I have a question for you.” She licked her lips. With that one small movement, I was hard as steel. “What’s that?” she breathed. I know that voice, sweetheart. She was ready to get fucked. I angled my head, acting like I was going in for a kiss. With maybe a millimeter separating our lips, I stopped. Our hot breaths mingled together, no doubt driving her as mad as it was me. But I had to make a point here. She had to be sure of her decision before we went any further. I didn’t want her doubting herself at the critical times or thinking I’d coerced her into anything. “Do you still want me?” I didn’t have to wait for an answer. The second the last word left my lips, hers crashed against them.

Jasmine
I shivered. It was a cooler October night. The temperatures were no doubt going to start dropping off as we got deeper into fall weather. I’d probably need to go grab my faux fur jacket, so my nipples wouldn’t poke through my dress for the photos and grace tomorrow’s front page of the society section. Nobody needed that.  I shivered again, just imagining the headlines. Even the design work etched into the stone walls of the building was impressive. Something from Old World Europe, almost Gothic in nature. Whatever the style, it felt great on my back as I leaned against it, the uneven carvings digging into my tense muscles. Poor substitute for a back massage but hey, I’d take it.  I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my emails and messages. Why, I didn’t know. I knew all I’d find would be work, work, and more work. Nothing personal or exciting. Just reminders of what I had waiting for me come Monday morning.   Knowing my time was about up, I stowed my phone back inside my clutch and pushed away from the wall. That’s when I heard probably the most terrifying sound a woman could ever hear in public.  Riiiiip. I froze.   I could already feel where the sheer material on my back was torn. And to steal a line from Xander? That was just fucktastic.  Stupid uneven Gothic carvings. At least it wasn’t the front of my dress, but still. I didn’t need “Designer’s Wardrobe Malfunction at Own Show” to be smeared all over tomorrow’s headlines either. My jacket would probably cover it up, but I still had to walk past dozens of people and cameras just to get to the coat check.  Chewing on my lower lip, I was about to pull out my phone and call Xander or Giselle to have them bring it to me when a deep, rumbly voice came from behind me.  “Need some help there?”  I was embarrassed to say I might have elicited a mousy squeak and jumped in the air. But it would have scared you, too. That was some horror movie shit right there. The man’s resounding chuckle sent another shiver shooting down my spine. But this one wasn’t due to the chilly night breeze.   “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.   “Um.” That was all I had. One freaking syllable.   Where did he even come from? How was someone that quiet? Was he a ninja? I couldn’t even turn around to look at him because that would put my back facing the rest of the party. He must have been pretty tall, too, because his voice came from above my head, and my heels raised me to a height of about five-foot-seven.  “Looks like you could use a hand,” he said, sounding almost amused.  Wasn’t it always great when your misfortunes resulted in someone else’s entertainment?  “I, um, have a jacket I can put on.” My voice came out softer than I’d intended. “It’s at the coat check.”  “I got it.” The next thing I knew, his warm hands were touching my back. His big, slightly callused hands that made my skin tingle.    I jolted. “Wait, what?”   I thought he’d meant he would go get the jacket for me. I’d been about to give him my coat check ticket. Why was he touching me? And could I ask him not to stop without sounding desperate Jesus, you’re pathetic.  His hands carefully gripped the sheer material. It was hard not to be distracted by the way his fingertips lightly grazed the skin of my back, almost absently.   “Are you particularly fond of this dress?” Uh, where was he going with this? “I mean, I made it myself…”   Did he just growl?   He immediately cleared his throat, as if trying to cover up whatever that noise he emitted was. “And you did an amazing job,” he rasped. “But it’s already ruined. If you’ll trust me, I might be able to improve on that.”  “Trust you?” I blurted out before I could stop myself. “I don’t even know you. Hell, I can’t even see you.”  He muttered something under his breath that I couldn’t make out. I could have sworn it sounded something like you haven’t seen me for the last six months, but the champagne must have been getting to me.   “Fair enough,” he said, his voice sounding more gravelly. “Then just trust that I don’t want your big night to be overshadowed by a ripped dress. Not when you’ve worked so hard for this.” That took me aback. Even more so than the soft, slow movement of his fingers as they pushed my hair out of the way. I typically wore it in waves or loose curls, but I had gotten a blowout that afternoon and left it straight for the show, which meant it was hanging even further down my back than usual. Why was I still allowing him to touch me like that? Because it’s more physical contact than you’ve had in months, and it feels pretty damn good.  "How would you know if I’ve worked hard or not?”  He paused, his fingers stilling. “It’s obvious to anyone here tonight that you have. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be your name on that wall."  I didn’t know how to respond to that. He was acting a little too familiar for a stranger with no face.   He grunted, sounding frustrated. “Do you want my help or not?”   Again, for a no-name, faceless stranger with a sexy voice, his abrasiveness weirdly didn’t unnerve me. “I guess—”    I didn’t even get to finish the sentence before the sound of more ripping reached my ears. “What are you doing? His hands jerked and pulled, and then I felt the material at my back give way. “Helping,” was all he said.  My outrage was building. “By making it worse?” He did some more ripping before eventually stepping back.    Funny. The lack of his presence made me squirm in place more than when he was actually looming right above me.    “Trust me,” he grated out. “That definitely didn’t make it worse.”   I reached around to feel for myself, but he batted my hand away. “Hey—” I started to protest, but the clicking of a phone camera stopped me.   Before I could ask what the hell he was doing now, he thrust his phone in front of my face. “Told you.”  The picture was of me, of course, though he’d caught my profile as I was talking to him over my shoulder. My back was completely bare now. He’d just removed all the sheer material and thrown it to the ground. Surprisingly, it nearly looked better than how I’d originally designed it. Then I couldn’t help but notice the hand that held the phone.    I’d been right about his size.   His hand was huge and made the phone look like a miniature in comparison. His nails were neatly trimmed. And the watch he wore had easily cost him ten grand. I recognized the brand. So, the guy was clearly wealthier than the average American    “Okay, you win,” I conceded. “It doesn’t look that bad.”   I reached out to snag the phone and delete the picture, but he was quick to pull it away. “Please delete that. Not that I don’t appreciate your help, but I don’t exactly like the idea of some stranger having a picture of me on his phone.” I turned around without another thought.   Everything went into slow motion.   Ohmigodkillmenow.   I knew who this was. And… Oh, my God. Kill me now.
