Luc
The Present

“You have a minute?” Paxton asked, leaning against my office door. I sat back, opening my arms in a welcoming gesture.
“Only if you’re bringing me donuts.”
He entered, shutting the door. He sat, tossing a folder on my desk.
“We have a situation.” He nodded at the folder.
Photos of mutilated dolls and letters with threats in thick black ink.
I sobered, frowning. “Who is the client?”
“It’s not a client. They were sent to Evie.”
“What the fuck?” I re-examined the letters. “What’s our plan?”
“Mailroom reported it. They’ve been coming for the last week.”
“Shit. These are –” I tossed the photos on the desk. “She know?”
“No.”
“Fuck.” I leaned back, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Sawyer’s been digging up her past. There’s nothing. Literally nothing.”
Pax crossed his arms, pegging me with a glare. “And why is one of my analysts doing that without my permission?”
“I’m her next of kin. Not an actual fucking family member. You ever hear about her past? No. She deflects. All the fucking time. She pushes you away. She keeps people at arm’s length, she–”
“No, it’s because you’re into her.”
“Fuck off.”
You fuck off, douchebag.” Pax leaned forward. “You’re into her. I’ve been distracted, but I’m not blind. Don’t bullshit a bullshitter. If you try to tell me you’re not into her, then you’re a fucking idiot and I’ll take you outside.”
“Well, fuck.” I offered a wry smile. “Can’t pull one over you.”
“You idiot.” He tossed a pen at me. I caught it, spinning it with one hand.
“What are we doing about this?” I tapped the photos.
“We need to find the threat.”
“Stalker?”
“Maybe.” Pax reached for one of the photos. “This is disturbing.” He held it up. The dolls genitals were melted, its mouth covered by duct tape.
“It’s personal. And angry. There’s a lot of rage in this picture. That’s dangerous.”
“She needs protection.”
“She’s leaving. Got her official resignation letter today.” The words tasted like sawdust. “London.”
“What’s the new job?”
“Some start-up.”
“You didn’t do the referee check?”
I frowned. “No. I assumed you did.”
Pax leaned forward, tapping a hand against his knee. “Do you know the name of the company?”
I shook my head. “Let me call Sawyer.” I hit the digits on my handset, leaving it on loudspeaker.
“Yel-low?” Sawyer answered.
“Sawyer, I’m here with Pax. Which start-up is Evie working for in London.”
Sawyer paused. “I… I don’t think she’s said.”
I exchanged a look with Pax. “Can you find out? Quietly?”
“Give me five.”
We waited, hearing his keys as he typed, muttering to himself.
“Umm, this is unexpected.” He murmured down the phoneline.
“What is?” I prompted.
“She doesn’t have a passport. Or any flights booked. There are no visa applications either.”
“She’s meant to be leaving at the end of the month.”
“Dude. She may be leaving us, but there is no evidence that she’s leaving the country.”
“Thanks.” I hung up, looking over at Pax. “She’s hiding.”
Pax nodded. “This.” He tapped a picture on the table. “And her leaving? Too coincidental.”
“Fuck.” I ran a hand through my hair. “Just… fuck.”
“You’re gonna need to get the full story.”
“If she’s been planning this, I highly doubt she’s going to do anything but run.”
“Way I see it, you have two options. One, you tell her and she runs. Or two, you tell her and she stays. Either way, you need to tell her. Learn from my mistakes. Don’t keep her in the dark.”
“You dick.” I threw the pen back at him. He caught it mid-air, sending me a shit-eating grin.
“Am I wrong?”
I rubbed a hand over my mouth, frowning. “Fine. But I’ll handle it.”
“And if she runs?”
“We’ll find her.”
Pax grinned. “Finally. You have your balls back.”
“Fucker.”

I took one look at the oncoming wall of people and broke the line. There were too many; we’d be crushed, they’d be injured. It was too dangerous. Around me, soldiers made similar calls, stepping back, moving out of the panicked protester’s way. Some tried standing their ground, only to fall under the first wave.
"Fall back! Fall back! Let them through!" I ordered, screaming into my radio. "Fall back! Let them through! Fall back!"
Some listened, others didn't. I didn't know if they could hear me. It was pandemonium. It was chaos.
It was war.
I watched in horror as a soldier, panicked, started beating a woman who’d run into him with his baton. She desperately tried to push him away, twisting to avoid him, trying to move towards the exit. She managed one step before his arm came down cracking her on the head. She went down, landing on the street, immediately swallowed by the wave of stampeding feet.
"With me!" I screamed, surging through the crowd, eyes on the spot the woman had gone down. I prayed someone was behind me. I fought against the people, using my shield as a weapon. I was pushed, shoved, and beaten as I clawed my way to where she'd fallen. I stepped on her arm. Immediately pulling my foot back, I looked down. Her face was a bloody mess, her body completely mangled with blood and bruising. I stepped over her, bracing a foot on either side, the soldier who'd hit her nowhere to be found. I held my shield up as still more people streamed through the narrow entrance, eyes panicked, bodies bloody.

What the fuck was going on?

My radio crackled, but I couldn't hear it over the screaming and thunder of the crowds. A child tripped beside me. I snapped out a hand, hurling him up, pushing him behind me. He clung to my leg, whomever he'd been with already lost in the crowd, pushed along by the surge.

Fuck.

A soldier appeared beside me. The guy from earlier.
"Colonel!" he yelled, struggled to be heard over the crowd. He braced, lacing his arm with mine, crouching we shuffled slightly, moving to fully cover the woman. The kid kept clinging to me, his small arms and legs now wrapped completely around my leg.
"She's bad," the guy said as the crowd started to thin.
"I know." Her legs looked broken, and she had to have internal injuries. Her face was a complete mess.
"She won't be the only one."
His arm flexed around mine, but we didn't move. We couldn't. We had to hold, or we'd all go under. I could see the end of the crowd, the line of soldiers three deep, followed by a row of trucks.
"Shit," the soldier yelled. "This is some dystopian shit!"
I grunted, shifting my grip on the shield. "Pray the truck is for casualties."
The crowd thinned, light enough I could shift into a crouch, my hand going immediately to the woman's neck.
"Pulse," I reported. "Weak as shit. She's bad."
"But alive," he pointed out. "We’ve got to get her help."

Location: Afghanistan

The afternoon sun shimmered against the horizon, heavy and ominous. Sunglasses cut through most of the glare, as sweat slid down the bridge of my nose. The heat of the day coupled with the lack of breeze had the marketplace stinking of rotten food.
Heartbeat elevated, stomach clenched, eyes narrowed—I was watchful. I kept reminding myself the monarch would only be in Afghanistan for less than forty-eight hours.
A lot could go wrong in forty-eight hours.
A car idling near the escort caught my attention. We were waiting for the monarch to finish his meeting with the newly elected president. I didn't like the position of the car.
"ALPHA One to CHARLIE Four, can you guys shift the white Toyota?"
"Roger, ALPHA One."
One minute. Two. No movement of the vehicle. My gut clenched. Something wasn't right.
The radio crackled. "ALPHA One, looks like a flat."
"Fuck." My eyes met Jack's before he looked back over at the car. I shifted my piece, using my free hand to click the radio. "CHARLIE, is it legit? What's the cargo?"
"Seems so. Just a bunch of fruit." Grover's voice was sarcastic in reply. I gritted my teeth. I couldn't wait till that little gnat went home.
My eyes flicked around the busy city centre, assessing. "CHARLIE, I need that vehicle moved in the next five. BETA team, start prepping secondary exit." I dropped my hand, turning to Jack. "This doesn't feel right."
"No." His face was grim as he watched the heaving mass of the market. "Something smells off." His smile was immediate. "Pun unintended."
I ignored him. "I'm going to raise the threat level." I raised my hand again to my equipment.
A voice crackled through the radio, halting my move. "Rose on the move."
I hit the call button. "All teams be alert. Threat raised to Amber."
Jack fell into step beside me. "Secondary exit?"
I nodded, deciding it was a go. "I don’t like this."
I saw The Rose hit the exit, bodyguards flanking him. He had personal protection from Katura and some of our best on him, including Colonel Foster. There was no reason to feel this anxious.
I met the colonel's gaze as we started towards the entourage, my hand raising to signal our change of plans. He nodded, turning towards The Rose.
The red dot hovered for a brief moment on the king's chest.
"Get down!"
"Incoming!"
