About the Author

I’m a Queensland, Australia gal and live in a small village in a rural area where the noise is that of birds and the air is clean.

For 35 years I worked as a Nurse in ER and Theater. I retired in 2011 and since then I have been able to devote my time to my first love and passion – storytelling.

Married to a Naval Officer for 44 years, we moved around the country on postings and lived overseas in Papua New Guinea for 3 ½ years. Living in a place, experiencing what the cities have to offer, their own unique beauty and way of life, gave me great ideas for stories I would later write.

Under my real name – Susan Horsnell, I write Western Historical Romance set in Texas or South Dakota (as I have travelled extensively in both) and so as not to confuse my readers, I write Steamy Contemporary, M/F, M/M, Menage and even a Shapeshifter under my pen name of A.L. Simpson.

I love exploring different genres and using life experience to weave into my stories. I love drama, twists, hard heroes with a soft center, which is sometimes hard to find and strong heroines who find themselves completed when they find their soulmate.

In our retirement, my husband and I travel a great deal although now, with an aging and ailing dog, we have confined it to exploring the beauty of Australia in our very well-appointed caravan as we are able to take her with us. I document our travels on my Facebook page for all to enjoy with me.

I hope you will take the time to pick up one of my books and I look forward to hearing from my readers either via Facebook or email.

EXCERPT

The three days Bree had off work flew by. Although worried sick about Liz, she had enjoyed her time alone with Jack. They had made love often, walked around naked and gone out on a ‘date’. The only dark patches in their relationship were his recurring nightmares which happened when he slept, day or night. If she was close by and felt, or witnessed, him becoming unsettled, she was able to gently awaken him and talk about how he was feeling. What he was seeing in his troubled mind. Twice though, she'd had to call on Greg for his help when he'd tried to flee the apartment to escape an insurgent, naked as the day he was born. Jack's mind had propelled him back to Iraq where he was caught in the middle of horrific fighting. He'd been unable to help his fellow marines or army soldiers, both men and women, from dropping like flies. He'd said to Bree, he felt helpless watching them being picked off one by one. Once asleep, the images returned to taunt him, the smell of cordite filled his nose, smoke so thick he could taste it. Tears flooded Bree's face when he screamed, jumped from the bed and hunkered down in a corner of the bedroom. His eyes glazed over and wild, head whipping from side to side. Watching, fearing the enemy was closer than he'd anticipated. Shouting orders to men and women under his command to get down, stay out of sight. Tears pouring over his cheeks when he lay on the floor over a dead body only he could see. Bree worried the Psychologist he was seeing might not be hearing the full story about Jack's fears and nightmares. It was difficult for her man to adjust to the sounds and sights of home and she watched as he forced himself to stay calm when a car backfired, an alarm sounded or when a couple fought out in public. Jack and Greg had shared a few conversations and were developing a rapport. Jack was even going to help him with some painting and maintenance around the apartment block while she was at work. Bree warned him not to overdo things.

 Chapter One

The day was warm, perfect for a garden reception. The view over Sydney Harbour was breathtakingly stunning. Brent noted, most people took advantage of it by standing at the bottom of the reception venue’s grounds. “Yoohoo! Brent.” A high pitched voice screeched from directly behind him. His shoulders tightened as he cringed. Brent let out an audible groan as he turned to watch Melody Wilson totter down to where he stood with his friends, Pete French and Jackson Bligh. The men had been his close friends throughout school and remained so. All three men perused Melody’s body as she sashayed toward them. “Could that dress get any shorter?” Jack asked, licking his lips. “I don’t know how she walks in those shoes. How do the heels not sink into the grass?” As the words left Pete’s lips, Melody’s six-inch heels lodged in the grass sending her toppling toward them. Jack wore her Martini down the front of his Pierre Cardin suit. Seconds later, Pete finished up on his back on the ground. Melody sprawled out on top of him. Brent erupted in laughter which drew twin glares from his friends. He reached down and assisted a now bawling Melody to her feet. She attempted to attach herself to his chest, but Brent stood her away. He’d had his fill of prima-donna, spoilt, rich brats. As Brent turned to help Pete to his feet, Melody was led away by her friends. The three men returned to their discussion, relieved to be rid of her. “I don’t know what it is about that woman, but she irritates the hell out of me.” Pete brushed grass from his suit. Brent nodded in silent agreement.

“Is she seeing anyone at the moment?” Jack asked, dabbing at the moisture on his shirt. Brent and Pete’s jaws dropped open, and they stared at him in disbelief. “Don’t tell me you would consider going out with her?” Pete asked. “She might be a good fuck, you never know.” Jack grinned at his friends. “Even a good fuck wouldn’t be worth putting up with everything else about her. Leave it be, Jack.” Pete warned. “I agree with Pete on this one, Jack. Melody would run off to daddy if she doesn’t get what she wants and you could find yourself in all sorts of shit. It wouldn’t be a lot of fun trying to convince the Deputy Prime Minister his daughter is a lying slut.” Jack sighed. “Oh well, one can but wonder.” “Wonder about someone with a less dangerous daddy.” Brent reiterated. A waiter offered them fresh drinks from a tray, and all three men helped themselves to a lemon, lime, and bitters. None of them ever drank at these social occasions; they had reputations to protect. “The meal will be served in twenty minutes gentlemen. A bell will ring five minutes before you are required to be seated.” “Thank you.” Brent acknowledged.

Chapter One

The wheels of the rented car spun as Emma turned onto the gravel driveway too fast. The car fishtailed so she hit the brakes and regained control before continuing toward the ranch house. Her foot rested heavily on the accelerator and she was still travelling too fast but was desperate to see her friend, Zoe. The speeding car narrowly missed a cowboy on horseback. Glancing into the rear vision mirror, she saw a thick cloud of dust engulf him. She was too anxious to care.

Emma screeched to a halt near the front door and leapt from the vehicle. Not caring the car door had been left wide open, she raced up the front steps, pulled open the heavy ranch door and crashed inside. “Zoe, where are you?”

Her heart broke when Zoe wheeled herself into the hallway. Seeing her best friend in a wheelchair caused tears to well in her eyes.

“Emma.” Tears streamed down Zoe’s cheeks as she held her arms out to her friend.

Emma rushed to her, dropped to her knees and gathered her into a hug. “I didn’t know, I didn’t know.” Emma dropped her head to Zoe’s chest and trembled as she cried.

Zoe ran her hand over Emma’s hair. “It’s okay, it’s okay.”

The girls were startled by the crashing of the front door against something solid. Someone in boots stomped toward them.

Emma raised her head, brushed away tears and turned around. Her heart slammed against her chest wall, her nipples tightened and her pussy clenched. The attraction was instant.
