The wind had been whipping around all morning. If I hadn’t known better, I would have thought that I was in the Arctic instead of Oregon. There wasn’t very much that I could see through my small window, but it was big enough to see that the bare branches of the oak tree that had died long ago were swinging in the wind. Not many people came to visit the mansion since I began living here fourteen years ago. But in the last six months no one came to visit at all. At first, I thought it might have been due to the change in weather, but then Master Winston said it was because I didn’t live up to their expectations and therefore, I was of no interest to them. He blamed it on my inability to learn and lack of obedience.

Moving away from the window, I ducked my head and wandered over to my small bed, which was nestled in the corner of the space that was my room. Pulling the covers over my body, I tried to keep warm. The attic was very poorly insulated and the exposed beams that held the rafters were proof. Sometimes it had gotten so cold that I could see my breath. I found the best way to keep warm was to pull the covers up over my head and trap the warmth of my breath beneath them.  As much as I hated this room, I hated what waited for me on the other side of the door when Master Winston came to call even more.

Closing my eyes, I let my mind wander. As I slowly began to fall asleep, I imagined myself as the fairytale princess who was locked in the attic by her evil stepfather, waiting to be rescued by a handsome prince. I knew the chance of ever being rescued would be slim to none, but just the thought of it actually happening was something that I would never stop hoping for. I wished that things could be as they were when I was younger. I would give anything to be together with my father again. So much time had passed since I’d seen him that every day that went by, my thoughts of him were dimmer. I feared that soon I would forget him all together. I wasn’t sure if it he would even be able to find me. Last Chance, Oregon, was just that, and not many people came here. I don’t think many people knew about this out-of-the-way town, at least not anyone who cared.

“Push me higher, Daddy, I want to go higher and fly like the birds.”

“Lanie, if I push you any higher you are going to fall.”

“I won’t, Daddy. I promise to hold on tight.”

The warm wind felt so good against my skin. I loved my new swing set. It was pink and purple and had two swings, a slide, and a Roman glider. It was the perfect gift for my fifth birthday. I knew why my dad had put in so many hours at work. It was so that he could buy me this swing set. Pumping my legs harder, I could feel myself going higher and higher. It was as though I could reach the birds above me.

Letting go of the chain, I reached out to touch one. It was so close, but not close enough. I felt myself falling from the swing. Instead of hitting the ground as I should have, I was sent spiraling into a pit of fire.

My love for writing began several years ago after an early retirement from a demanding job that I loved, but also hated because it consumed so much of my time. Now, I am able to focus my time on what I love. Writing romance has been a life long dream and to actually say that I am a published author is beyond what I would have ever expected.

Even though some may say I have a little naughtiness in my books, I look at it as an added bonus for my readers. After all what is a romance book without a little spice.

When I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with friends either at home or out on the town. Mostly, I enjoy a relaxing night at home where I can enjoy a glass of wine in the company of a good book.

“I don’t understand. Why, of all the women in Houston, would you pick me? I am a nobody. And you clearly need someone that is more refined than I could ever be,” I confessed, waving my hand to remind him of his wealth.
“It is for that reason that I chose you, Hanna.”
As he moved from his chair to sit next to me, already my body was becoming overly warm. The wine was also beginning to make me feel fuzzy. Taking the empty glass from my hand, he placed it on the table. It could have been the wine, but all I wanted to do was kiss him. When his eyes met mine, there was nothing to stop me from doing just that. Wrapping my arms around his broad shoulders, I pressed my lips to him in a forceful kiss in which I held nothing back. The best part was that he hadn’t pulled back. Instead he took me into his arms and tenderly kissed me back. I could taste the sweet wine on his lips as his tongue brushed my lips before it invaded my mouth with wet heat. The kiss, although drunken and sloppy, was one to be remembered.
I knew that with a kiss like this, it would lead to much more. Even though I was in no state of mind to refuse, I knew that I would regret it in the morning if I allowed it to continue. Breaking free before things got out of hand, I wiped my hand across my swollen lips and said, “I think it’s time that I left.”
As I stood to my feet, I could feel my surroundings begin to move in all directions. My body swayed back and forth as I tried desperately to hide the fact that I shouldn’t have had that last glass of wine. Holding me close to his body to steady me, Aiden lifted my chin. “I think it would be best if you stayed here tonight. I am in no condition to take you home and Albert has probably retired for the evening.”
Who was I to argue? His point was well made and I wouldn’t be able to afford a taxi to drive me home, nor was I going to take a handout. Nodding my head, I responded, careful not to slur my words. “Wouldn’t want to wake up Albert.”
Putting one foot in front of the other, I concentrated on my steps, careful not to sway too much as I walked toward the house. With one arm around me, Aiden helped me do just that. When we reached the foyer, I looked to the stairs, wondering if I would be tumbling down them in my condition. Walking on a flat surface was one thing, but climbing steps was another. Feeling my apprehension, Aiden scooped me up in his arms and carried me with ease up the stairs. I was beginning to think that he wasn’t as drunk as he implied.
I wasn’t sure where he was taking me since he hadn’t set me down when we reached the top of the stairs. I had faith that he would be a gentleman about this situation and he was. When he opened a door at the end of the hall, I knew that he was taking me to the guest bedroom that he had shown me earlier. Of all the rooms that were on this floor this had been my favorite. It was decorated with light colors of blues and greens and it was the most feminine of all the rooms on the floor.
Pulling back the covers, he placed me gently on the bed. For a moment I wanted him to stay, but knew that it would be a mistake. Settling in, the last thing I remembered before closing my eyes was a tender kiss he placed on my cheek.
Some would call me a little naughty but I see myself as a writer of spicy thoughts. Being an erotic romance writer is something that I never imagined I would be doing. There is nothing more rewarding than to put your thoughts down and sharing them. I began writing three years ago and have enjoyed every minute of it. Excerpt

My restless night had me up later than I had wanted. Looking over to my alarm clock, it was already 8:00 a.m. Mr. Colin hadn’t come to get me. I could only guess that the arrangement with Mr. Milford wasn’t going to happen until later. Crawling out of bed, I headed to the bathroom to take a quick shower and get dressed before he came to get me.

Slipping on a floral dress with matching shoes, I headed down the steps before anyone suspected that I had slept in. Just as I rounded the staircase, I heard Mr. Colin’s voice. “Meet me in an hour. Our usual spot.”

I wasn’t sure who he was talking to, but I assumed it was one of his business associates or another client. Hurrying to the kitchen, I didn’t want to be seen, or worse yet, caught hearing his conversation. As I pushed the door open, Mr. Colin said behind me, “Tessa, we need to leave in ten minutes.”

Stopping in mid-step, my hands remained glued to the door as I replied, “Yes, sir.”

Grabbing a to-go cup of coffee, I headed out the front door to where Simon was waiting with his body leaning against the front fender, sporting an arrogant grin which showed just what an asshole he was. Pushing from the car, he moved to the back door and pulled it open for me with a sarcastic comment, “How about another round tonight, love?”

If it wasn’t for the fact that he was much bigger and stronger than me, I would have punched him in the face. Giving him an evil look, I dipped my head and took a seat next to Mr. Colin, who was already inside. There was one thing I hated about Simon more than his cocky attitude, he always managed to speak his mind out of earshot of Mr. Colin, knowing full and well that if I said anything, it would be my word against his.

As we drove into the city, there was only silence between us. Not once did Mr. Colin reference the slight bruising on my cheek or what Simon had done to me after he left the training room. Maybe it was best that nothing was said. I wasn’t sure that he could have said anything that would have made me feel any better. Turning my head, I gazed out the side window

watching the beautiful homes with their perfectly manicured lawns and expertly trimmed hedges pass by. As I looked, I wondered how the lifestyles of the families that occupied those beautiful homes compared to mine. Were they happy? Was there love between them? But most of all I wondered if they were they free to do as they pleased.

Consumed by my thoughts, at first I didn’t notice that Simon turned off the main road and headed to what appeared to be an industrial part of LA. I couldn’t understand why we would have driven here. Then I remembered what he said about meeting in the “usual place.”

Adjusting my position, I tried to get a better view by looking out the front window. Simon pulled inside an empty warehouse. There was no one inside, only pallets of merchandise occupied the large building. Taking in my surroundings, a few minutes passed when a fancy red sports car began to approach us. My eyes were focused on the man driving the expensive looking car. Lowering his sunglasses, he had to have been the most handsome man I had ever seen. Normally, most of Mr. Colin’s associates are old and overweight, but this man was gorgeous. Everything about him was perfect.

Breaking my fixation, Mr. Colin opened his briefcase and pulled out a manila envelope before opening the back door and exiting the car. All I could do was watch him approach the man as he stepped out of his car. As Mr. Colin stood in front of him, I wished that I could hear what was being said. I wanted so badly to roll down the window but knew that would be a big mistake. When he handed the handsome man the envelope, he didn’t seem very happy. I got the feeling that Mr. Colin and this man were not on friendly terms.

As Mr. Colin walked back to the car, my focus was only on the gorgeous man as he got in his car. Opening the door, I couldn’t help but ask, “Who was that man?”

“No one you need to worry about,” he replied sharply.

As we drove off, I couldn’t help but look at the red sports car and the man inside as he backed up and pulled out of the warehouse. Watching him drive away, I felt a strong pull on my hair, knowing that it was Mr. Colin trying to get my attention. I wasn’t sure what he was trying

to prove, but when he pressed his lips hard against mine, I only thought of one thing and that was to push him away. Instead of going with my defensive instinct, I should have allowed him to have what he wanted. It would have saved me the pain of getting slapped across the face.

Placing my hand on my cheek to soothe some of the pain, Mr. Colin warned, “You will not defy me, Tessa. Just remember who you belong to.”

Feeling defeated, I lowered my eyes and responded, “Yes, sir.”

~*~*~*~

When we returned to Mr. Colin’s home, I was once again ordered to meet him in the training room. Adhering to his request, I changed into a black corset with matching panties and silk stockings. One thing I wished he would have left out were the four-inch stilettos. Something special must have been planned. Never had Mr. Colin requested I wear this form of attire. Slipping on my shoes, I took a quick look in the mirror to make sure that I looked presentable. Everything was perfect except my hair. Gathering it to one side, I braided it in one long braid and tied it in place with a red ribbon to match the red in the corset.

Heading out of the bedroom, I slowly descended the stairs and made my way to the basement where the training room was. The temperature was about ten degrees cooler as I took each step, carefully balancing myself to keep from tumbling headfirst down the stairs. Safely reaching the bottom, I walked down the long hallway until I reached the training room. Pushing open the door, no one was inside, which made me think that I may have misunderstood Mr. Colin. He wasn’t one to be late or one to accept anyone else being late. I thought about leaving and searching for him, but my instinct told me that I should wait until he arrived. Taking a seat on the edge of the bed, I folded my hands across my lap and focused on the door.

Since I hadn’t slept very well the night before, I decide to lie down for just a moment. I had been waiting for such a long time that I could feel my eyes begin to get heavy. I just needed

to close them for a moment. Drifting off, I entered the world that I loved so much with the green meadow and wildflowers blowing against the warm breeze giving off a sweet fragrance.

Lying on the soft grass, the sky was so blue, and the sun felt so warm against my face. As I took in the warmth, there was something different about this dream. Off in the distance, I saw the form of a man approaching me. Propping my body on one elbow, I held my hand above my eyes to block the sun. I watched with anticipation, keeping my eyes focused on his every step as he got closer. As he stood in front of me, I knew this man. Although I didn’t know his name, I would know that face anywhere. What I didn’t understand was why he was in my dream? Yes, he was gorgeous. Beyond gorgeous, to be exact, but why would he be here?

As he held out his hand, I couldn’t help but take it. Lifting me to my feet, we stood only inches apart. I could feel his breath on my forehead as he leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine. His scent was masculine and filled my senses. With a willing mind, I parted my lips and allowed him to dip inside. Never had I been kissed in this manner. It wasn’t demanding, but gentle and compassionate. The way I had always imagined a kiss should be.

In the distance, I kept hearing Mr. Colin calling me. I couldn’t bring myself to wake up. All I wanted was to remain in my perfect world with this amazing man. His voice became louder and I could sense the anger in the tone; even then, I didn’t want to leave. Then it happened. Mr. Colin entered my dream, only I was wide awake. The grip he had on my arms as he shook me back to reality told me that my fantasy was over. His voice was stern as he ordered, “Put something appropriate on. We need to leave.”

New town, same life. Even though leaving Manhattan was the hardest thing I had ever done, I knew it was best for me to leave and start over. So here I stand in my plush penthouse apartment, one year later. Taking a sip of my Scotch on the rocks, gazing out my floor-to-ceiling window, wondering what this magnificent town was going to bring me tomorrow. I always liked the nights in LA. It seemed to be the only time that the big city came to life. I loved the rush of a city at night. It was like escaping into a whole different world where every fantasy could be lived.

It was also the time when your worst nightmares could appear, and believe me, I had my share. As I downed my drink, I reflected that the night always brought back one nightmare in particular. I will never forget the look on my brother’s face when he realized I was dead. God, how I hated doing that to him, but it was the only way to break free.

Looking back at that day at Willow Crossing, it was amazing what one tiny pill could do. It could slow the heartbeat just enough to make it seem like you were dead. A little bit of animal blood as a prop could make it that much more real. With a little planning and a little money anything was possible. Luckily for me, I ran into the right man, and he needed a little help himself. The hardest part was finding a body. “Good old college academics and those donor lists,” I thought to myself with a chuckle. Who would have thought that a body being donated to science would be my savior? And with a little help from my needy coroner friend, I would soon be nonexistent. Free to start over.

Grabbing my suit jacket from the barstool, I casually put it on, making sure to catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror above the expensive accent table. There was always something about a man in a suit that women seemed to go crazy for, and with the money I’ve made, I always made sure my closet was brimming with the best designer suits money could buy. Picking up the keys to my Jag from the table, I smoothed back my brown hair and adjusted the collar of my freshly-pressed shirt. Tonight was my night off and I really wanted to have some fun.

As I rode the elevator down to the parking garage, the memory of what I left in Manhattan came aboard. Thinking back, the only downside to my plan was hurting the one person I loved most. I guess for every action there is a reaction, and the reaction was a new life for me. Besides, he’ll survive. With the only woman he ever loved at his side and the men he served with watching his back, he’ll do just fine. As for me, I am alive and well, living in California. I’m no longer Josh Hyatt, born of a convict and raised by a mom and dad who couldn’t be honest to the son who brought them so much joy. That man died a long time ago, and a new man was born.

While I smiled to myself in my new reality, the elevator door opened, and a gorgeous brunette got on. Checking out the curves on this beauty, I needed to get me some of that. Inhaling the scent of her perfume, I casually leaned over and asked in a sultry low voice, “That scent you’re wearing is breathtaking. What is it, if you don’t mind me asking?”

The minute she turned and our eyes met, I knew this was going to be easy. There was a hunger inside those emerald eyes that couldn’t be mistaken. At least there was one thing I didn’t regret. Watch out, LA, Xavier London is in town.
