Exclusive Excerpt:

A waiter appeared to take our drink order, and Peter ordered an incredibly expensive bottle of wine as well as some caviar. “Is that all right?” he asked me. “Sure,” I said. “I’ve never had caviar.” That was the extremely expensive part of the menu, the one I tended to avoid when I came here with Gilly. We stuck to appetizers like their yummy flatbreads or their specialty cocktails. I glanced at Peter’s mesmerizing hazel eyes, studying them because I’d never seen eyes quite that color before. Hazel that was lighter than brown, richer than green, almost golden. I could stare at them all night. I shook myself. I needed to focus. I wasn’t supposed to be here having a good time. I was supposed to find out his true intentions toward Carmichael’s and the merger. I was a double-agent, and I couldn’t forget it. The waiter poured our wine—rich, burgundy goodness. “To you,” Peter said, raising his glass. “You… intrigue me, Lori. And not many women do. I’m very much looking forward to getting to know you.” We clicked our glasses together. I took a sip and felt the warm liquid slid down my throat. Deliciousness. “So,” Peter said. “Your mother didn’t hold back.” I snorted a little. “She doesn’t have an edit button, but she let us off easy.” Peter quirked an eyebrow. “Well, I appreciate her honesty. I liked that she got right to the point. Too many people spend their lives dancing around the issue.” “I guess. But it put you in an awkward spot.” “Why? I’ve got nothing to hide.” Peter’s eyes sparkled a little. I wondered if that were true. “Everybody’s hiding something.” To myself, I added, like the fact that you’re a corporate predator, for instance. “I’m not. Ask me anything you want to know.” “Anything?” Questions whirled through my mind. Are you planning to gut Carmichael’s? Are you still in love with that gorgeous ex-wife of yours who cheated? Am I going to lose my job? Do you…. like me as much as I like you? Is this just a game for you… or something more? I could hardly decide which question I wanted to ask first. “Anything,” he confirmed. “Pull no punches. What is the one thing you want to know about me more than anything else?” Peter took a sip of wine. I realized there was truly one question I really wanted to know. “Just what are your intentions….?” With me. With Carmichael’s. With everything. “Oh, that one’s easy,” Peter said, sliding a bit closer to me, so his leg was fully pressed against mine. “I intend for you to fall in love with me.”
