Title: Pivotal Decisions
Series: Moonlight and Murder
Author: Reily Garrett
Genre: Romantic Thriller
Release Date: March 22, 2020
She carries a gun for a living…
yet never expected to become a target.
Sabine’s early morning hike ends with discovering her friend sitting in a chair by the canal and gazing at the sunrise. Peace and serenity pervade.
Except, he’s dead.
To discover the how and why of his murder, she must first survive the shrewd killer intent on removing human collateral and obtaining unique technology that could change the course of mankind.
Coyote Waylin hasn’t set foot in the Everglades for six years, not since the night he broke his brother’s jaw and saved their sister’s life. After receiving a desperate call from his sibling, he rushes south to untangle a web of murder and intrigue.
Together, Coyote and Sabine sort the snarled web of lies and deceit while struggling to maintain their personal space. Failure to thwart the ingenious killer could result in untraceable mass murders spanning the continents.

Prologue Death, like reality, comes in layers. He was a scientist. Confidence and conviction in facts with distinct slices of possibilities for future endeavors kept him focused and thinking forward.
To delve into the mind and alter the truth as one knew it, everything they touched, heard, saw, and perceived, was his bailiwick. The realm he’d perfected.
Yet at the moment, confusion submersed him in a world he didn’t recognize. Scenes flashed not just before his eyes, but encompassed his entire existence and touched every sense. How could he discern reality from illusion?
He remembered sitting at his desk in his home away from home. Then a noise. A flash of pain in his head. Someone laughed as they threatened him, demanding his precious work. They spoke with ruthless assurance as they penned a note and stuck it to his chest.
Yet he wasn’t dying, nor did he feel the impending doom of a gun to his head.
What he did feel was the briefest flicker of pain flashing through both lower legs before dissolving into thousands of pins-and-needles sensations. Warmth flooded his brain, followed by a tranquilizing calm soothing his anxiety. Wasn’t that his area of expertise?
Muddled and conflicting sensations diminished with the tingling heat spreading throughout his chest and permitted a deep breath. Phantom shadows of panic receded to the periphery of his thoughts, pushed out by increasing perceptions of rightness that shouldn’t exist in his world.
His mind struggled to remember what he’d intended to do. He’d intended to remove his VR goggles to make an adjustment, hadn’t he? Then why did the softness of his mattress beneath his thighs feel so right? He didn’t have a bedroom in his satellite office.
His feet weren’t chilled from the cool tile floor, nor did he recognize the setting from his bedroom window.
He lived in a modest contemporary rancher with his wife, newlyweds of less than a year. Their cozy structure was surrounded by two acres of St. Augustine Grass. The closest neighbor enjoyed a Spanish Revival house with a low-pitched tile roof, half-round arched doors, and windows with adobe brick.
He saw none of it.
Instead, miles of beautiful flowerbeds with blooms that shouldn’t appear in December sprawled over lush hills, another topographical feature absent from southern Florida. Despite conflicting perceptions, he couldn’t muster the energy to tear his gaze away. Inability to turn his head soon lost meaning in the wake of the bouquet of scents wafting through the open window.
He knew the soft, sweet taste of each blossom as if they rested on his tongue, sweet with a tinge of some exotic spice. Bird song encouraged him to linger and ignore unpleasant sensations of forced immobility. There existed no obvious reason to move or feel concern.
A slight breeze ruffled his hair, its warmth another source of soothing calm. He hadn’t been wearing his glasses, yet could see flowers glistening with morning dew in crystal clarity, the fine stamens stark against the velvety texture of each petal. The pad of each fingertip tingled with their softness despite the distance that lay between him and the outdoors.
Every cell of his body felt cocooned in a warm fuzzy blanket.
Nirvana was confirmed as his mind flashed to a different landscape, yet it didn’t appear to be a dream. Everything felt so vivid, so real.
Before him, the soft ocean surf lapped at his feet, the sand warm between his toes and the gentle susurration a colorful melody. Pungent scents of salt and copper filled his nostrils and he briefly held his breath until it passed. Calm, balmy breezes whispered through nearby feathery palms and whisked the unpleasant aromas away.
If he died and was lucky enough to see pearly gates, this was where he wanted to stay. Life’s concerns drifted on a sea of contented bliss.
He briefly closed his eyes in ecstasy. The sudden spray of salt water against his cheek snapped them open to look over the deck of a large ship. The rolling motion forced him to grab the railing to either side of him and clutch tight. Knowledge that there should only be one rail before him didn’t prevent his grasp for dear life.
Something tugged against his legs and belly. He thought to rub it then decided it unnecessary as his spirit drifted above the beauty of roiling seas below him.
A peculiar numbness infiltrated his lower legs, followed by a lightheadedness not overcome by the pleasant tingling at the base of his skull. He rarely felt the bite of cold under his skin in southern Florida.
Perhaps he’d take a nap and let the strange sensations pass.

A Critical Tangent

Title: A Critical Tangent
Series: Moonlight & Murder #1
Author: Reily Garrett
Genre: Romantic Suspense/Thriller
Release Date: December 29, 2019
Enter a world where ignorance and darkness mask deceit and chaos.
Katherine Tallerman’s focus on designing drones is shattered after her prototype records her roommate’s murder. Captured video details the masked killer’s promise to find his remote witness and finish the job.
Experience has taught good reason for not trusting any cop, especially when they come knocking on her door. Unfortunately for Keiki, their suspicions narrow when the second of her trio of friends disappears without a trace.
Conflicting evidence at a brutal crime scene leaves gossamer threads weaving a complicated web of lies and deceit. Every lead Detective Garnett finds steers the investigation to a deeper, darker network entangling the young coed in a labyrinth of cunning subterfuge.
Garnett is torn between following the letter of the law and protecting the witness determined to clear her name. Can he earn Keiki’s trust in time to save her life, or will the psychotic killer destroy the woman who is crushing his emotional defenses?
“Aw, Keiki, if I could find the fun button in your brain, I’d switch it to permanent on. You’re always working. You should’ve come hiking with me. Fresh air would do you good.” Shelly tisked then smiled. “Not that there’s anything wrong with loving your work, but you have an old man psyche trapped in a young woman’s body.”
“Thanks, Shelly, but no.” Keiki manipulated her latest drone to perform the simple but intricate task of picking a flower. The outing did sound nice, but Shelly needed private time to mourn the loss of her sister.
“The next time you fall asleep working, I’m going to town with my entire set of permanent markers.” Shelly held her hand out to accept the offered blossom pinched from its low-growing stem and giggled. “You’d look good with cat whiskers and exotic pink eyes.”
“Test that theory, and I’ll replace your scented shampoo with baby oil.” The threat of laying waste to makeup or hair products usually ended any debate. “I’m about out of battery life. Can you bring it in?”
“Sure. Turn off the motors.”
Damn. The soft whirr from the small rotors altered in pitch as they shut down one by one.
Malevolent shadows crawled along the edges of the surrounding woods, receding with the rising sun. Even from miles away, Keiki’s skin crawled.
“I hear something.” Shelly rested a palm beside her woodland flower plot to lean forward.
Through remote viewing, Keiki watched her doppelganger freeze then tilt her head to the side, wrinkles of concern marring her forehead.
“What?” Thanks to the hilly terrain, two-way communication crackled off and on.
“Huh, must be a rabbit or squirrel. Anyway, as I was saying. Become a spinster with hundreds of drones instead of cats. I’ll keep you in contact with the outside world.” Again, Shelly paused and tilted her head as if listening to something off in the distance.
“Hey, why don’t you come back now and we’ll have breakfast?”
“Yeah, okay. I’m coming. Can you extend the range on this thing’s transmission ability? The video feed isn’t so great.” Lips nibbled between her teeth marked Shelly’s worry when she leaned forward to whisper.
“I’m working on it. What’s wrong?
“I’m kinda spooked. Something doesn’t feel right.” Her fingers’ wobble shook the drone’s body. It listed sideways with a squeak.
 “Shelly?”
“I’m fine. It’s just my clumsiness in challenging gravity… Oh, about the frat party tonight, wanna go?”
The viewing angle changed again as Shelly stood.
“No. And before you start, I do have fun. I just don’t have time to party with you and Gabby. Some people stay focused on their future,” Keiki grumbled as she monitored her prototype’s efficiency on her laptop and sipped a caramel latte.
A distinctive metallic snap coincided with her device’s struggle to function.
“Oops. Sorry, Keeks. An arm broke off above your tracker thingy. I’ll stick it in my pocket, and you can glue it back on, or whatever. Do we still have audio and visual feed?”
“Yeah, just bring the rest of it back in one piece, okay?” Keiki groaned, predicting the hour it would take to fix. “Careful. That thing is one of two prototypes, but that one gets the best reception.” Keiki set her coffee down, the cup tilting when settling on her friend’s access card. “Oops, your work ID now has a brown ring on it. You really should be more careful with it.”
“How rude of me to leave it where you’d drink your coffee.”
“That’s why we get along so well. We think alike. I’ll stick it on my dresser. It’ll be safer there.”
“If you’d stop losing yours, you wouldn’t have to borrow mine… shit. Something is coming.” Fear coiled through Shelly’s voice. “Sounded like a branch snapping down the trail. Something big and heavy.”
“Is it a black bear? You know what to do.”
A silent moment passed.
 On screen, the image shook.
“Uh… who are you? What do you want?” Shelly’s wrist rotated, tilting the angle of the drone’s camera to the trampled weeds.
Through the odd angle, booted feet shuffled backward to leave two furrowed tracks. No one had ever intruded on her friend’s private sanctuary.
“I’m a messenger, here to show your boss what happens when he refuses to work with us. We tried being nice. Now we’ll do things my way.”

Blood Union

Title: Blood Union
Author: Reily Garrett
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: August 25, 2019
The only good vampire is a dead one.
Crystine employs every witchy spell and feminine deception in her arsenal to keep her ward safe. Failure would signify mankind’s downfall at the hands of demons.
Over the centuries, she’s honed her skills to protect the innocent, but evil forces have united for a common cause.
When the odds stack against her, she makes a deal with the very creature she’s spent her life hunting, a vampire who professes to be her destined mate.
It’s easier to kill the monsters who slaughter innocents for sadistic pleasure than to face one who claims to support mankind. Now, she must set aside her hatred while enduring his persistent need for close proximity.
He is everything she’s never encountered, with seductive skills perfected over many centuries and with many women. Her mind targets him as the enemy, but her senses crave his touch.
A bargain is struck. Blood is shared. Until the threat to mankind has ended, he is safe from her blades, but nothing can protect her heart from his carnal sexuality. She has no defense.

Chapter One Gryffen

Gryffen considered the many ways he could punish Crystine as he skimmed the treetops in the early morning light. His thoughts circled the ones she’d enjoy—if he could prevent her from killing him in the interim. The greatest risk arose from her five centuries’ worth of experience with spell casting. She’d proven herself skilled as well as clever, much to his dismay. He’d met his match.
Gray bled to orange, violet, and blue as the sun’s rays crept over the earth while he considered her motive for fleeing the sanctuary of his home.
It wasn’t the man which caused Crystine to sneak out like a thief in the night; it was her own reaction to him that challenged her re-examination of everything she thought she knew about vampires.
She’d spent centuries training and killing his kind and couldn’t switch gears long enough to sort her feelings. It didn’t matter they’d fought demons side by side in order to destroy an artifact destined to end humanity. The enemy of her enemy was not her friend.
Like prejudices burdened his thoughts. Vampires and witches just didn’t mingle, much less mate.
Another fiery pain sliced through his arm, the result of his witch’s newest wound. Whatever sensation she experienced was replicated in his body, a wretched reminder of them sharing blood.
Their connection’s sudden emergence indicated her lack of strength in shielding her aura. His fist clenched around the hilt of his sword in preparation to protect his mate.
Through their link, he sensed her desperation, along with overwhelming regret. She’d wanted a fresh start, away from vampires, demons, and the evil encroaching on mankind. Instead, she’d stumbled into more of the same darkness that had comprised her life.
Flying low over the desolate forest concentrated his vampire senses until the dull thud of steel striking demonic hide altered his southern course.
Doubt overshadowed his confidence in her ability to survive with each mile passed despite her wielding Cliffin blades the way an expert chef handled knives, an extension of the hands.
A flash of insight accompanied by an inhuman growl altered his path over the lush canopy. Veering slightly west, he witnessed glimpses of her struggle through budding leaves and swaying pine needles, her steel catching the sun’s first beams.
She faced three creatures, one beginning to slip her witchy hold. If not for the strength derived from their blood exchange the prior night, she’d be dead.
The intensity of last night’s encounter had left them both exhausted to the extent he hadn’t believed she’d run.
He’d recoiled at her self-disgust when the last shudder of her orgasm had subsided. Neither believed fate would pull natural enemies together. If not for his personal warding spell, she might have ended their problematic relationship with her sword.
He felt a kinship with the male praying mantis.
Waking from an unnatural sleep, he knew she’d fled to preserve her tattered self-respect. If not for the terror of what she now faced, he would’ve taken his time in stalking her, teasing her with his presence.
Another burst of speed shot him over the small clearing as the sun’s rays crept along the horizon. Crystine faced off against greater odds yet with equal determination.
She’d feel the specter of his aura before seeing him approach. Whether or not the demons she fought detected him depended on their level of power.
He circled behind them and descended while drawing his sword then hacking through the first creature’s neck using gravity and momentum. The speed of descent coupled with his strength detached its head, its look of shock in falling to the ground forming while black acid sprayed from its severed skull.

Past employment as an ICU nurse, private investigator, and work in the military police has given her countless experiences in a host of different environments to add a real world feel to her fiction.
Over time, and several careers, many incidents have flavored the plots of her stories. Man’s cruelty and ingenuity for torment and torture is boundless, not contained by an infinite imagination. Witnessing the after-effects of a teenager mugged at knifepoint for a pair of tennis shoes, or an elderly woman stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver for no apparent reason, left an indelible impression that will forever haunt her subconscious. In counterpoint, she has observed a woman stop her vehicle in severe, snowy weather to offer her own winter coat to a stranger, a teenager wearing a threadbare hoodie. Life’s diversities are endless.
Though her kids are her life, writing is Reily’s life after. The one enjoyed after the kids are in bed or after they’re in school and the house is quiet. This is the time she kicks back with laptop and lapdog to give her imagination free rein.
