Attraction

Title: Attraction
Author: Ruby Porter
Genre: Literary Fiction
Release Date: April 14, 2020
Cover Designer: Imogen Stubbs

The present reckons with the past in Attraction, Ruby Porter’s atmospheric debut novel.
Three women are on a road trip, navigating the motorways of the North Island, their relationships with one another and New Zealand’s colonial history. Our narrator doesn’t know where she stands with Ilana, her not-quite girlfriend. She has a complex history with her best friend, Ashi. She’s haunted by the memory of her emotionally abusive ex-boyfriend. And her period’s now weeks late.
Attraction is a meditative novel of connection, inheritance and the stories we tell ourselves. In lyrical fragments, Porter explores what it means to be and to belong, to create and to destroy.

My mum buys her lotto tickets from that Mobil. She rings ten minutes after I leave to remind me to pick one up. —Somewhere lucky. Maybe Matamata, or Thornton. Get it where you feel the pull.
I say, —Okay, Helen, and hang up.
I’ve always called her that, because I have two mums. She met Chris not long after I was born, and Chris moved in when I was eighteen months old. They were together for ten years. My dad was never really on the scene.
My earliest memories don’t come in images, but in thoughts. Realising it was my third birthday. Wondering what to call my mums. Recognising Helen walking down the road, while in a car with Chris. I haven’t retained the picture of her, or the road, just that knowing. Maybe it shocked me that her life existed outside of our house. Maybe it shocked me that her life existed outside of mine.
I say, —What’s your first memory? No matter how vague.
—It’s not vague, Ilana says. —Falling into the bath. I don’t remember the feeling, but I remember the view of the ceiling.
Through the soft light of water.
—And I remember Mum, pulling me out. That was the scariest part, her being that frightened. You know, cos I was a kid.

- Carina - I hustle out of the busy deli. Busy being the operative word. I do a doubletake before stepping into the small place, surprised to see so many students in line. Mom and Dad insisted that the campus would be practically barren, but they were wrong. Classes aren't in session yet but there is plenty going on. Student athletes are already on campus gearing up for their season. Students with apartment housing are trickling in. The fraternity and sorority houses are bustling with life. I am just another student on campus. I tuck the dinner I picked up for us close to my chest. Desirae went to work out and she's easier to deal with if she's been fed. Talk about hangry issues. The girl is a handful, but I wouldn't have her any other way. I never had a friend like her in high school. It's hard to imagine another like her on campus. Desirae's feisty, fierce, and fantastic. Things are guaranteed to never be boring with her around. I waltz back to the dorm. I can't help but admire my new surroundings. Beautiful trees provide plenty of shade and scenery. The impressive buildings take my breath away. The performing arts center and the university bookstore call to me but I'll have to visit them another day. The campus is like its own small town. I love the different buildings and businesses on campus. At first, I hadn't understood why my parents insisted on leaving my car behind. It all makes sense now. Who needs a car when everything's within walking distance? My feet almost stumble on the flat sidewalk as my gaze locks onto the most amazing set of blue eyes I've ever seen. Like wow… Ripples of heat course through my body as my eyes devour his ash blond hair and toned body. I hold my breath desperately trying not to audibly moan. The guy is hot as hell. Thank goodness Diego is gone. I wouldn't want him interfering with this fine piece of man-candy. I don't know anyone else on campus, but I would love the opportunity to get to know this guy. I bite my lip admiring his confident swagger. There's just the right amount of playfulness in his eyes to diminish his arrogant approach. I try, and probably fail, not to appear overeager. "Hey" his sexy drawl has my toes curling. The guy exudes confidence and sensuality. One of Diego's friends had been like that. It had been impossible to resist him. We'd been friends with benefits until he went away to college. Maybe it's time to find me a new friend… "Hi" I lick my lips drawing his eyes to my mouth. I hope my olive skin hides the flush of heat rippling over me. I don't usually blush easily. Guys come a dime a dozen. They're easily expendable but this one is just too damn fine to pass up. "Dinner for two" he gestures at the sandwiches in my hands. I nod temporarily losing my tongue. It takes a moment for my brain to catch up. "Got dinner for my roommate and me." "Freshman year" he inquires. His eyes slowly graze over my body. I hold still while he openly admires my long black hair, olive skin, and curves. My lips curl into a smirk as his chest sharply rises at the sight of my generous breasts. I love my Latin curves and this guy obviously appreciates them too. "Yep" I confirm, "And you?" He smiles brightly. I almost swallow my tongue at the sight. "Junior year... What's your name beautiful?" Damn he's direct. I bite back the automatic sarcastic response accustomed to the lame one-liners, but this guy is as smooth as silk. His words and body language most certainly make me feel beautiful. "Carina" I reply, rolling my "r" to emphasize my Hispanic heritage. His pupils dilate as I say my name. "Jaxon" he breathes, making my insides flutter. It's time to go. The guy is so smooth I almost want to forget having dinner with Desirae and just jump in the sack with him. I take a cleansing breath. The overpowering attraction to him doesn't bode well for me. I need to get acclimated to my new environment before getting distracted by hot guys. "Well Jaxon, it's been a pleasure. See you around." I don't wait for a response. He feels dangerous. I sashay away, feeling his heated gaze on my ass. I don't bother smothering my smile; he can't see it. "I'll see you soon belleza" he calls out causing me to nearly stumble. Shivers course through my body as the word resonates within me. He winks before walking in the opposite direction. I make no qualms about openly ogling him, merely reciprocating his heated appreciation.
