Sophie’s nostrils flared, the hand not holding her phone fisted and flailing. “How dare you … You have no right … I am not your property.” She was so upset that she couldn’t get out what she wanted to say: You are a deranged asshole who takes pleasure in hurting women. Stay away from me, or I’ll have you arrested. She knew she couldn’t really have him arrested. Not without hurting her parents’ precious reputation. What would Cecilia do? Sophie knew the answer. She’d side with Chad. She wasn’t sure about her father. He was much nicer to Sophie than her mother had ever been, but he kept his distance. Always had. Anytime Sophie and her father started to form a bond, somehow her mother intervened. Picking an argument with Johnathan would surely force him to storm off. She was always watching. Was she jealous? What kind of mother would be jealous of a daughter trying to connect with her dad? “You became my property when you married me. Consider yourself lucky I’m a patient man.” Patient? Is he serious? She wanted to scream and did inside of her head. To be honest, she was just beginning to stand up to Chad. Even when she’d left, she did so when he wasn’t around. She’d remained in his shadow for years, the dutiful spouse. But that all changed when he pushed things too far, nearly killing her. Chad exhaled as though trying to regroup. “Look. Things have gotten blown out of proportion, dearest. Come home, and we can talk. Truth be told, I can’t even remember why you left. But whatever the reason, let me make it up to you.” His voice was light and airy, doing its best to hide the monster lurking within. “You know exactly why I left, Chad. And I won’t let you do that to me again.” His laugh, or more his snicker, ridiculed. “What in the hell are you talking about? What did I do to you? Other than being your husband. Forgive me for being unable to keep up with your mood swings.” Chad sounded so much like her mother. Did she coach him? “I’m done playing around, dearest. I want you here by my side. If you didn’t want this life with me, you should never have married me. But you did, so stop playin’ around and get your ass back here before I have to start explaining to your father and the board why my wife has decided to run off to the mountains for some unknown reason.” Sophie’s lower lip trembled, her heart unsure what to do. Chad had a way of making her feel diminished and stupid. Like her problems were petty. Like she owed him just for marrying her. “I can’t come back right now. I need more time.” She heard the wavering in her voice, and she hated it. Another long exhale from Chad. “You are testing my patience here.” He paused. “Your father is holding a meet-and-greet with some investors next week. I need you here to represent me and your family. I want to make a good impression.” Of course you do.
