The bus stops, and I fly through its halfway-open doors as if the Devil himself is chasing me
Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God!
My soles squeak on the pavement, my face is a sweaty, flustered mess, and I feel like I’m about to faint by the time I reach the Hunter Corp. “Good morning!” I shout at the guards, who all smirk, but thankfully hold one of the lifts open for me.
Grr, no time for breakfast either.
I shake my head and, getting inside the elevator, press the button for my floor. I hate it when my days begin like this. Stupid, stupid bus was twenty minutes late! And now I can’t even get coffee before I start work.
“Coffee!” I groan out loud, dropping my head back until it rests on the wall. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for a hazelnut latte right now.
The lift dings and I run through the open doors and down the corridor like a maniac. I drop my handbag under the desk and throw my coat over my chair. I turn on the lights, the computer, and the printer and am just about to sit to replace my trainers with the sensible heels I wear in the office when I notice the silence.
No beeping, no humming, no flashing lights, nothing.
“What’s wrong, sweetie?” I coo, petting the dark monitor. I find our electronic equipment temperamental, and a little TLC usually goes a long way. I press the ‘on’ button again, and still nothing happens.
OK. The main lights are on—even with the big windows surrounding us, the overhead lights are always on during the day. And the printer is also working. So the computer must be unplugged somehow. That, or the IT guy who was here on Friday screwed up and I’ll have to call him again.
The socket is somewhere on the floor under the desk. “Well, no time like the present,” I mutter, getting on my hands and knees and crawling under the damn thing.
Hmm, the plug is in, so maybe it’s the socket that’s off. I feel around until I find the switch … and then there’s that familiar sound of electronic equipment coming back to life.
“OK, baby, you’re all better now.” I smile, crawling out backwards when a deep, baritone voice says from behind me—
“Who are you? And what the fuck are you doing under the desk?”
Startled, I let out a yelp and jerk upwards. The back of my head hits the very edge of the desk hard. “Aaah!” I hear my anguished scream and screw my eyes shut. Pain stabs through my brain, making me crouch even lower to cradle my head.
“Mmm,” I moan, dazed. Little white dots appear behind my eyelids, and I swoon from side to side. God, it really is like seeing stars, isn’t it?
“Shit! Are you OK?” Big hands close around my waist and I’m suddenly lifted into an upright position.
Oh, bad idea. Bad idea.
Dizzy and with a throbbing headache, I feel my knees wobble and I’m sure I’m going to pass out. I fall against the hard wall behind me.
“I got you, sweetheart. I got you.” An arm slips under my knees and I’m lifted into the air.
I take a chance opening my eyes, and through the dizziness see the most beautiful face I’ve ever seen on a man. The electric-blue eyes looking down at me are so intense, I feel they can see right into my soul. I shiver and look away, my eyes closing again, turning everything black.
Alex Mellow lives with the two loves of her life, her darling husband and son, in London.
Her time is divided between her passion for writing and, of course, her beloved little family.
At home, when she’s not writing or running after a very active toddler you can find her reading, watching a good movie or trying to do some exercise. LOL. At least she tries.
