Title: Tall, Dark & Furious
Author: R.L. Mathewson
Genre: Paranormal, Romance
Series: A Pyte/Sentinel Novel #6
From bestselling author R.L. Mathewson comes the sixth installment of the Pyte/Sentinel Series…
For readers who enjoy paranormal romance with a twist.
For three centuries, Trace waited for this moment, imagined all the things that he would do to the Pack that tried to kill him, and now that he was free…
All he could think about was the woman that he’d claimed as his own. She was everything that he’d always wanted and once he had his revenge, he would make her his.
Sam had resigned herself to a lot of things over the years, being the town joke, blacking out at inopportune moments, and living with a dog that hated her, but what she hadn’t planned on was suddenly finding five large men destroying her basement, looking for a tomb that she never knew existed. In one moment, her life changed forever, leaving her to wonder how she was going to make it out of this alive.

“I
really hate you,” Samantha informed the traitor that was following
her as she tightened
the towel around herself while she tried to ignore the splitting
headache that was starting to concern her. She quickly made her way
to her bedroom and once she was there, she slammed the door shut in
the little bastard’s face only to bite back a groan when she
realized that she wasn’t alone.
“What’s
this?” the man that had barged into the bathroom a total of fifteen
times to make sure that she was doing as she was told before stealing
her clothes, asked from where he sat on her bed, examining her old
iPod.
“It’s
an iPod,” she said, absently noting that he was now wearing a pair
of Nathan’s old jeans and had probably already searched her
brother’s bedroom.
“What
does it do?” he asked, as she walked over to her dresser, wondering
if he’d found anything that she could use to get out of this.
“It
plays music,” she said as she quickly grabbed some clothes, hoping
to get dressed before-
“And
this?” he asked, drawing her attention back to find him holding-
“Oh,
my god!” she gasped as she dropped the clothes in her arms to
rescue Bob before he realized what it was for, but something, mainly
the way that his eyes suddenly turned red and that growl that she
really shouldn’t find sexy was torn from his throat, told her that
he’d just figured it out.
With
a somewhat hysterical smile, she managed to grab Bob from him and
shove it back in the nightstand drawer with the hopes that there
wouldn’t be any follow up questions, but of course with the way
that her day was going, she really should have expected it.
“What
do you use that for, wife?” he asked, making her wince.
“It’s
umm, a sleep aide?” she said absently, wondering if he’d found-
“And
this?” he asked in that same deep sexy growl that let her know that
yes, yes, he had indeed found her pocket rocket.
The
sound of Bob Jr. turning on only confirmed it. Reminding herself that
she needed to tread lightly here, she turned around, and mumbled, “It
helps with the sleep aide,” noting the way that his red eyes
narrowed on her before she quickly turned around as she shut it off
and shoved it in the drawer with Bob. Once that was done, she turned
around and-
“What’s
a call?” he suddenly demanded as he picked up a large black duffle
bag that she hadn’t noticed before and dropped it on her bed.
“A
call?” she repeated back slowly as she did her best to keep her
gaze from wandering towards the cellphone on her nightstand.
“I
need a call,” he said firmly as those terrifying red eyes locked on
her.
Q & A
- What is a Pyte?
A Pyte is a true immortal. He
is the product of a vampire and a human woman. Pytes can also have
children of their own day. They’re born as weak as a human baby,
but the difference is that they need to consume blood as well food in
order to thrive. If they don’t, they’re left weaker, will grow
slower to the point that they’ll appear to be younger than they
are.
If they survive to their
sixteenth birthday, they will go into a coma where they’ll go
through their transformation, becoming everything that they were
meant to become and once they’re done, they’re immortal and
nothing will be able to kill them. They’ll appear human but have
all the strengths of a vampire with none of the weaknesses. They can
go in the sun, withstand holy relics, and have the ability to create
another Pyte.
Once they’ve created another
Pyte, they’ll be able to create a stronger breed of vampire, which
is why Masters, shifters, and Sentinels all over the world are
desperate to get their hands on them. Masters want them to create a
stronger army of vampires for them while shifters and Sentinels are
willing to do anything to stop them.
Their immortality should make
them unstoppable, but it’s their one true weakness.
- It’s been four years since Fated was published, what happened?
Life.
Life happened, unfortunately.
In 2015 and 2016, we were dealing with a lot of stuff, a lot of
changes, and thankfully, we were finally able to move. It was a very
necessary move for our safety, so a lot of things were put on hold
for a while. I focused on taking care of the kids, getting them
settled, finally getting my son’s autism diagnosis, which has
actually been a big relief finally getting answers. I did my best to
keep working, I focused on contemporaries since they were the easiest
to write.
When I write paranormal
novels, I like to take my time, make sure the details are correct,
develop the characters a little more so that they are able to make
the world that I’m trying to create more believable. Basically, I
stress over every detail.
I never planned on letting
this much time go by between the books. I actually hadn’t realized
it had until this past year when readers started to ask about the
books. It’s the same for the Cursed Heart series. The books were
supposed to be out a lot sooner than this. My goal for 2020 is to
catch up with the books and get most of the series caught up.
- Who is Trace? We haven’t heard about him in the series before. Is he a new series?
Trace
is new to the series. His father is Ethan, who you met very briefly
in Tall, Dark & Heartless. He is the vampire that Caine contacted
to get information about Pytes so that he could help his mate. Trace
is his son that went missing centuries ago and has never stopped
looking for.
Trace
is a Pyte and brand new to the series as is his mate. With that being
said, Kale plays a very important part in this book and you will get
to see the others as well. Jill and Joshua are in this book as well.
You will get more information in this book, more answers and a better
sense of where the series is heading.
- Who will be next in the series?
Kale’s
book will be next. His book is titled Unstoppable.
His mate will be the key to the series. I have a lot of plans for
that couple. It’s actually already started and I am looking forward
to getting back to it. I am hoping for a Halloween release, but I
don’t want to jinx myself. At this point, I’m just keeping my
fingers crossed and hoping for the best.
- Will Jill and Joshua ever get their own books?
Yes,
but it won’t be anytime soon. Joshua plays a crucial part in this
series so I need him to do a few things before we can redeem him. As
for Jill, her character has a few more trials to go through before
her story will be ready to be told.
- There’s a rumor going around that there will be a YA series for the Pytes. Is that true?
Yes,
there is a Pyte YA series in the works. I have been playing with the
idea for the past few years and trying to narrow it done to what I
want. I’ve been debating a few things and I’m almost ready to
start. I will say this, Marc will not be in this series only because
he will not have his mate until he’s well into his adulthood. The
one thing that I’m truly debating about the YA series is whether it
will be focused on one couple or a new couple for every book. I’ll
know more about where the series is heading once the first book is
done.
- What makes your Pyte/Sentinel series different than the rest?
Well,
for one, the concept of a Pyte is my creation, something that I’ve
been toying with since I was a kid. There are a lot of vampire
romance novels out there, with different takes on what a vampire is,
how they’re created, their weaknesses, etc. and they’re great,
but the Pyte/Sentinel series does it a little bit differently. I’ve
tried to create a world that could easily blend in with ours with
humans completely oblivious to the real world around them.
I’ve
created this world so that even readers who don’t normally like
paranormal romance enjoy these books because I try my best to make
the characters relatable. The Pyte/Sentinel world is not overwhelming
with paranormal aspects filling every page. The books ease readers
into the story and allow them to keep up without having to remember
all the different rules or concepts that make up this world.
Growing up, R.L. Mathewson was a painfully shy bookworm. After high school she attended college, worked as a bellhop, fast food cook, and a museum worker until she decided to take an EMT course. Working as an EMT helped her get over her shyness as well as left her with some fond memories and some rather disturbing ones that from time to time show up in one of her books.
Today, R.L. Mathewson is the single mother of two children that keep her on her toes. She has a bit of a romance novel addiction as well as a major hot chocolate addiction and on a perfect day, she combines the two.
