From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new, STANDALONE contemporary romance…

The last thing Dorian Vanderbilt expected was to find me painting in my crop top when he returned to the mansion he hadn’t inhabited in years.
He was understandably surprised I’d turned his living room into an art space.
Life is certainly full of surprises, though, but not always in a good way.
I learned that lesson when my aunt and the billionaire she married died unexpectedly while traveling.
I’d been living with them, and just like that, my life was turned on its axis.
Unsure of what was next, I stayed alone at the barren estate figuring out my next move.
That was when Dorian—the late billionaire’s only son—showed up.
I’d never met Dorian Vanderbilt. He’d been living on the other side of the country.
But now, he was home, left to pick up the pieces of his father’s legacy.
Not only was Dorian devastatingly handsome and mysterious, but he was the sole heir to the Vanderbilt fortune.
He didn’t seem to like me—at first. We were total opposites. But I was grateful that at least he didn’t kick me out.
We stayed out of each other’s way for the most part, save for some late-night kitchen run-ins or unexpected bonding sessions in the home theater.
Over time, though, we grew closer. Turned out, our chemistry was pretty combustible.
I was falling in love with him.
Until everything I thought I knew turned upside down yet again.
And fate left me pining for the one man I’d ever loved.

Veiled Justice

Title: Veiled Justice

Author: Heather G. Harris

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Cover Designer: Covers by Christian

Publication Date: Aug. 28th, 2025

Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

Blurb:

Murder has crashed the party, so justice won’t wait for an invitation.

Champagne, caviar… and a corpse. This high-society party wasn’t meant to end in murder. When my brother calls me to investigate the brutal stabbing of a female ogre at the charity ball of the season, the glittering magical elite quickly become a sea of suspects.

Everyone who’s anyone was there, but glamour has given way to something far darker. Someone’s playing a deadly game, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s my job to cut through the beauty and lies to find a killer hiding among the rich and powerful.

As a police inspector with the Connection, I’ve seen plenty of strange things, but this case reeks of entitlement, secrets, and old money with something to hide. Then the King of the Ogres storms in. Furious and formidable, he demands justice. Stopping him from tearing through the guest list is almost as hard as keeping my mind on the case, because rage and power look annoyingly good on him.

But when a dryad turns up dead at another elite event, I realise I’m chasing a serial killer who thinks they’re too rich to face consequences… and they’re setting my brother up to take the fall.

With a rookie partner finding his feet and my talking-bird sidekick offering sharp advice (and sharper insults), I’m racing against the clock to solve the case before my brother faces the lethal justice of the Other realm…

Immerse yourself in The Other Detective Series – perfect for fans of supernatural crime, complete with a fierce heroine, gritty murder investigations, and a slow-burn romance.

Heather is an urban fantasy writer and mum. She was born and raised near Windsor, which gave her the misguided impression that she was close to royalty in some way. She is not, though she once got a letter from Queen Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting.

Eventually, I was able to put Dorian out of my mind and continue my movie night for one. Pulp Fiction was almost finished when the theater door opened again.
I turned to find Dorian entering—alone.
“Is it over?” he asked.
My pulse raced as I paused the movie. “About ten minutes left.”
Without further comment, he took the seat next to me, sinking into the chair and stretching his long legs. He closed his eyes and let out a long sigh. His delicious cologne wafted my way, sending unwanted arousal through me. I pressed play on the movie, hoping to move out of this hyper-aware state.
“Where’s your date?” I asked after the movie finished and she still hadn’t reappeared.
“She left.”
“Is she a…girlfriend or…?”
“Definitely not,” he said, staring at the screen.
“Someone you hook up with?” I pried.
He turned to me. “You always this nosy?”
“Well, we are stepcousins,” I teased. “You can tell me anything.”
“We go way back, don’t we? So much I nearly kicked you out when I got here.”
“Details…” I shrugged.
He chuckled. “She’s someone I used to hook up with when I lived here years ago. Thought it might be interesting to reconnect with her, but I was grossly mistaken.”
“Why? What was wrong with her?”
“Nothing wrong with her. I was just bored out of my wits. It’s probably me that’s changed more than anything. That happens when you leave home, I guess.” He reached for some popcorn. “Anyway…found myself more in the mood to watch Pulp Fiction than I was to make pointless conversation with her.”
“I can start it over, if you want to watch from the beginning.”
“Nah.” He shook his head. “But I’ll watch another movie with you, if you’re down.”
Ohhhkay.
Hesitant excitement washed over me. I’d been pretty lonely lately if the idea of having someone to watch a movie with felt exhilarating. But at the same time, this was Dorian Vanderbilt—not exactly someone I could relax around yet. But I sure as hell wasn’t going to say no.
I finally nodded. “That’d be cool.”
“You choose.”
“Well…” I took a moment to think on it. “If you were in the mood to watch Pulp Fiction, maybe another Tarantino?”
He scratched his chin. “Actually, have you ever seen Snatch?”
“Guy Ritchie, right?” I nodded. “I’ve heard of it but never watched it.”
“His style reminds me of Tarantino. I think you’ll enjoy it. Would you want to watch that?”
“Yeah.” I nodded, impressed with his effort to think of a movie I would like.
Dorian went over to the laptop and pulled up the film, then returned to the seat next to me. He reclined his chair as I pressed play on the remote. He once again stretched out his long legs.
For the next couple of hours, we watched the movie intently, neither of us saying a word until it finished. That was exactly how I liked it. But he did look over to see my reaction at certain parts, which I also liked. Any nervousness I’d had dissipated as the movie went on. And I certainly couldn’t complain about sitting close to him, since he smelled like heaven. I hadn’t been out with a member of the opposite sex in what seemed like ages. Sitting this close to an attractive man made me miss dating, even if the man sitting next to me currently was out of my league.
When the credits came on the screen, he reached for the remote and lowered the volume. “What did you think?”
“It was awesome. I love movies where you don’t know what to expect, and the power dynamic can change at the drop of a hat.”
“Ah…sort of like how you suddenly had the power when I discovered you could control those dogs?”
“Maybe, yeah.” My mouth curved into a smile.
“They actually like me now. But they did not like Savannah.”
“Savannah was your date tonight?”
He nodded. “Yeah. Tess saved me, actually. She helped me get out of the rest of the date.”
“What do you mean?”
“I wanted to end the night early and had been thinking up an excuse. Then Tess rubbed her asshole on Savannah’s shoe as we were standing in the foyer. She decided right then and there she wanted to call it a night.”
I cracked up. “Saved by the asshole.”
“Exactly. It was perfect.”
“Did you drive her home?”
“I called her a car.”
“Well, I’m sorry again if I disrupted your evening.”
“Trust me, I had more fun watching the movie with you than I would’ve sitting through whatever sappy film she picked.” He sighed. “And…I’m sorry if she was rude to you. She was probably just intimidated.”
“Intimidated? Why?”
He glared. “Really? You’re gonna make me say it?”
“Sure.” I smirked.
“Because you’re attractive…” His eyes fell to my abs. “And you seem to have no other wardrobe besides crop tops.”

“I asked for butter toffee,ˮ a middle-aged man at the counter snaps. Heʼs holding a to-go cup in his hand, and heʼs glaring at Wren like she just murdered someone. “This is vanilla.ˮ

“Oh, shoot.ˮ Wren reaches for a new cup. “Iʼm so sorry. I can make you a new one, shouldnʼt take more than a minute or two.ˮ

“Why couldnʼt you just get it right the first damn time?ˮ he demands.

Wren falters. “I—um. It was an accident. The vanilla and butter toffee syrups are right next to each other, and theyʼre a similar color, so I mustʼve mixed them—ˮ

“Seriously?ˮ he spits out, causing Ava to glance over from where sheʼs working through a long line of cars in the drive-thru.

“Accidents happen,ˮ Wren says gently as she works on his new drink. “But Iʼm putting together—ˮ

“Oh, donʼt give me that bullshit. Youʼve got one of the easiest jobs on the fucking planet. How hard can it be to make a coffee right?ˮ

“This guy is a piece of work,ˮ Oliver mutters. Heʼs watching the man carefully, his hands clenched into fists. No doubt, he wants to go up there and deck this guy.

I know I do.

Wren sets the half-finished drink on the counter and crosses her arms. “You wanna try that again?ˮ

The man jerks his head back. “Excuse me?ˮ

“Iʼm not making you another drink if this is how youʼre going to treat me. You can either calm down, apologize, and accept the fact that Iʼm human and make mistakes, or I can give you a refund, and you can leave.ˮ

Oliver and I exchange a quick glance, and his expression reflects exactly what Iʼm feeling: pride.

Weʼve seen Wren handle her fair share of rude customers over the past few months, but she normally takes it instead of standing up for herself.

I get it—itʼs easier to just do what the customer wants and get them out of your hair. But this isnʼt the first customer Iʼve wanted to throw out.

The man scoffs. “Uh-uh, you donʼt call the shots around here.ˮ

Wren smiles brightly—too brightly—her eyes flashing with annoyance. “Refund it is.ˮ

“Excuse me?ˮ He stands straighter, taking a step toward the counter, and it sets off a million alarms in my head.

“Hey.ˮ Iʼm standing before I can stop myself. “Back off, man. Itʼs just a coffee.ˮ

Wrenʼs eyes widen, and I hope Iʼm not making this worse for her. This guy has made a whole scene out of a wrong drink, and now everyone in the shop is watching.

“Why donʼt you mind your fucking business?ˮ he spits out at me. “This is none of your concern.ˮ

“Donʼt care. Say one more rude thing to her, and Iʼm throwing you out of here.ˮ

Wren ducks her head as she taps away at the register, probably issuing the guyʼs refund.

“You donʼt have any authority here,ˮ he tells me smugly as he turns back to Wren. “And, quite frankly, you donʼt even deserve the minimum wage youʼre making. I mean what are you, stu—ˮ

“Thatʼs enough.ˮ I take his arm and yank him toward the front.

“Have your shitty drink back,ˮ the guy snarls, and before I realize what heʼs doing, he flings the to-go cup at Wren.

Shit.

Wren jumps back with a yelp. The lid pops off, and some of the coffee lands on her torso and arms, but most of it falls onto the floor.

In the corner of my eye, I see Rhett and Oliver jump to their feet. In a flash, Rhett is in front of me, meeting us halfway to the door. He grabs the guy by the back of his neck and hauls him toward the front.

“Hey! What the hell do you think youʼre doing?ˮ the man shouts. “This is assault! I have an excellent lawyer. Iʼll press charges against you if you donʼt—ˮ

Rhett throws him out the door before he can finish the sentence. The guy stumbles and almost falls, but he catches himself and straightens. He whips around, and it looks like heʼs about to barrel right past Rhett to get back inside, but then he freezes.

Rhettʼs frame is taking up most of the doorway, and I can only imagine the glare on his face.

Knowing Rhettʼs handling that, I turn to face Wren.

Oliver is already behind the counter, grabbing paper towels from the hand-washing sink. “Are you hurt? Did he burn you?ˮ

Fuck. This is all my fault.

I donʼt think Oliverʼs words register in Wrenʼs mind.

Sheʼs staring after Rhett, a mixture of shock and awe shining in her eyes.

“Hey. Wren.ˮ Oliver brushes his fingers across her cheek, the light touch making her blink rapidly.

When she finally meets his gaze, her eyes widen with realization. “Iʼm—Iʼm okay. It was just drip

coffee with flavored syrup. He asked for a lot of cream, so it cooled it down a lot.ˮ

“Thatʼs something, at least,ˮ he mutters.

Wrenʼs gaze falls to Oliverʼs hands as he continues cleaning her up. She tracks his every movement as he moves to her apron, trying to soak up the liquid.

“You donʼt... I can do this,ˮ she mumbles.

“Let me help you. Youʼre shaking.ˮ
